Momentous Occasion

AMERICA CAN BE PROUD

As the year draws to a close, I'll take a moment to celebrate what really is important.
In a few short days, an African American man will move from his private residence into a much larger and infinitely more expensive one owned not by him but by the taxpayers. A vast lawn, a perimeter fence and many well trained security specialists will insulate him from the rest of us but the mere fact that this man will be residing in this house should make us all stop and count or blessings - because it proves that we live in a nation where anything is possible.

Many believed this day would never come. Most of us hoped and prayed that it would, but few of us actually believed we would live to see it. Racism is an ugly thing in all of it's forms and there is little doubt that if this man had moved into this house fifteen years ago, there would have been a great outcry - possibly even rioting in the streets. Today, we can all be both grateful and proud that no such mayhem will take place when this man takes up residency in this house.

This man, moving into this house at this time in our nation's history is much more than a simple change of addresses for him - it is proof of a change in our attitude as a nation. It is an amends of sorts - the righting of a great wrong. It is a symbol of our growth, and of our willingness to "judge a man, not by the color of his skin but by the content of his character".

There can be little doubt now that the vast majority of us truly believe that this man has earned both his place in history and his new address. His time in this house will not be easy - it will be fraught with danger and he will face many challenges. I am sure there will be many times when he asks himself how in the world he ended up here and like all who have gone before him, the experience will age him greatly. But I for one will not waste an ounce of worry for his sake - because in every way a man can, he asked for this. His whole life for the past fifteen years appears to have been inexorably leading this man toward this house. It is highly probable that  in the past, despite all of his actions, racism would have kept this man out of this house. Today, I thank the lord above that I am an American and that I live in a nation where wrongs are righted, where justice matters and where truly anything is possible.  Let's applaud the man right now!

Well, I couldn't bring myself to applaud a man whose sole accomplishment to date is running for office. I do not, however, wish him ill. A SCotUS decision that he is inelible to serve as PotUS would please me considerably, but once he's sworn in, I wish him success . . . as I said in this post (at KisP, I think):

Though many revered minds, including Albert Einstein and George Bernard Shaw, have disagreed strenuously with the concept of patriotism, to me it’s merely an extension of the qualities of love, loyalty, and purpose. I figure that anyone who can’t love his native land probably can’t love anything, including family.

A nation isn’t exactly a bunch of connected real estate with lakes and forests and mountains and stuff. It’s a feeling; it’s belonging; it’s commitment; and patriotism is awareness of and loyalty to that idea, that concept. As the song says, “You gotta stand for somethin or you’ll fall for anything.”

Ayers and Wright and other similar megalomaniacs must be fundamentally very lonely people with no sense of connection or belonging. Most normal people need social interaction, and that’s a lot easier to come by when they share common fundamentals, particularly in such things as language, customs, principles, and purpose.

Wright published his loyalties in his church’s credo, which said in essence that Africa comes first, not America. He later clarified that stance with his “God Damn America!” tirade which the liberal media more or less discounted as “taken out of context” and Obama simply relegated to the significance of a random brain fart or something.

Ayers actually wanted to dismantle the federal government (which may or may not be a good idea) through actions which would have brought violence and bloodshed to innocent people. His was a selfish crusade designed for little more than adventure, excitement, and notoriety.

Our incoming precedent president is critically ignorant of realities and completely devoid of executive or international experience. His lone foray into management involved community “organizing” in certain Chicago neighborhoods which have since deteriorated beneath what they were when he first applied his magic touch to them. His geopolitical experience consists primarily of brief association with an African father who was an internationally drunk socialist, a slightly longer relationship with an Indonesian Muslim stepfather who managed to die of liver failure, and a roving mother with poor mate selection skills and an inability to get along with people on long-term basis, including her own parents.

His sense of belonging is suspect, despite anything he says about loving “my country” or promises about the economy and jobs and rebuilding relationships with sister nations alienated by the Bush administration. Here is patriotism: I don’t want to see him fail, because I want to see the country prosper.

For 8 years now we’ve had mainstream media and millions of adult citizens wishing earnestly for the Bush administration’s total collapse. They wanted Dubya to fail in everything he attempted except the one thing he never accomplished: tracking down and wasting bin Laden. Their hatred did not spring from any sense of patriotism, but from a desire for payback for a Republican congress’s impeachment of a womanizing blowhard. They didn’t even particularly want to see the wussy scammer Al Gore or the horsefaced gigolo John Kerry take the reins, just that Dubya didn’t.

The best interests of my country can now be served by cooperation from both sides of the aisle in a non-partisan effort to rejuvenate the economy, emasculate radical Islam, update the country’s infrastructure, reduce the oppressive weight of overgovernment, pay down the national debt, put the 3 Rs back into the educational system, root out the graft and corruption, and learn how to conduct a major election that doesn’t take over two years or generate accusations of voter fraud, kickbacks, media bias, and rampant hypocrisy.

Patriotism at its best would include stifling the inclination toward partisan sniping and foot-dragging as soon as the guy is sworn in. We can criticize, of course, but for conservatives to behave as the Olbermanns and Streisands and Mathewses et al. have done for the past 8 years would be nothing but immature selfishness, unpatriotic childishness. What good would sinking to their level be? What purpose would be served by wishing our chief exec rough seas, ill winds, and bad luck?

One of the maxims of true patriots has always been “My country, right or wrong.” Well, that prob’ly oughta apply to its leadership, too, no matter how inexperienced and scatterbrained it might be. Pissing and moaning won’t help a helluva lot.

I think we will have actually passed this milepost when people vote for an African American, NOT because he is an African American, but because he best represents their interests and political views.

Obama was elected in large part by people who wanted to be part of a "Moment In History", and against their better political instincts. The day will truly have come when a conservative black man is elected president based on the popularity of his platform.

Not one to spoil it for anyone else, I got it too.

And on a side note, the wife still wants to know when you graduated from St. Pats.

I appreciate the artistry, rather like Hamlet I, ii, 64–67 and the countless other delightfully loaded Janusian double entendres throughout the play . . . I merely chose one facet and reacted to it, Jooz notwithstanding. My blogment is a pro pos to everything up to the embed, and my tongue is in no danger of being bitten.

My family moved to Maryland during my freshman year. Which reminds me ... I periodically remember phone and padlock numbers for some reason. A while back I remembered my locker combination at St. Pats. What's with that? I'm doing it more and more.

Come on folks even the
hillbilly got this one early in the gag.

Well, perhaps the locker combo is in "reality" keeping locked that compartment inside your head, where the dark side of Rodger is waiting....naaaaaa.

"The Admiral" still gets letters from Notre Dame ... usually requesting money.

Finally, Happy New Years to ya'll on the east coast! Hope you have lots of popcorn stocked up, think we is gonna have lots to use it for.

For those who did NOT get it, put your mouse on the red applause button. When I first read that I was feeling my b.p. go up like you've rarely seen. Then the "punchline". Chill. It's what kept me from a stroke.

Happy New Year to you, and yours!

I can remember what kind of carburetor my high school best friend's car had, but can't remember where I ate lunch yesterday. I was really worried about it. (OK the wife was worried about it.) My doc said: "If you can't remember where the car keys are, you don't have a problem. If you can't remember what the keys DO, you have a problem."
(The carb story gives you a minimum age for me)

I'm awarding you the Agatha Christie Mystery Blogger award for this. Priceless.

I agree with just about everything ET wrote in his first posting above. However, by the time Obama's first term is up, he will have proven to all of us conservatives that he is nothing more than just another black man living in Government housing. Dr. Lawrence Peters, in his book published some 30 years ago, said that all men, at some point, rise above their level of incompetence. Obama is prominent living proof of that. That may not be very evident to some today, but by the end of 2011 it will be very obvious to all of us, conservatives and liberals alike. Even to the Reid/Pelosi Cabal of Congressional anarchists.
