I believe the original was called "Brilliant Pebbles"
After a speedy start from a rocket, this and its siblings will each choose a target in space--the midcourse of a ballistic missile and collide with that target at a few thousand miles per hour. The current Ground based missile defense has a single kill vehicle. Multiple kill vehicles will take out multiple warheads. The noisy jets are the control thrusters that guide the KV to the target.
