How to secede without really trying

''Guess the time is ripe to create a whole new state.''
A good beginning

A move to secede on California-Oregon border

(10-05) 04:00 PST Yreka, Siskiyou County -- Some folks around here think the economic sky is falling and state lawmakers in Sacramento and Salem are ignoring their constituents in the hinterlands.

Guess the time is ripe to create a whole new state.

That's the thinking up here along the border between California and Oregon, where 12 sparsely populated, thickly forested counties in both states want to break away and generate the 51st star on the nation's flag - the state of Jefferson.  continued ....

Anyways, been there done that. Stan Statham had a plan for a two state division that mostly focused on the abusive water theft for S.CA, ie, little/no compensation for N.CA supplying it. As a N.Stater, I am biased on this.

But, in addition to the water, we, N.CA, also have the beautiful Emerald Triangle. Ah, the lush giant redwoods and acres of "green", in so many ways.

Medicinal purposes? Hmmm....S.F get in line.

A nonbinding referendum to split off was on the ballot in north CA counties in 1992. It passed. See how much has happened since then? Don't hold your breath.

Interestingly, Marin County, the one just on the north side of the GG Bridge, home to hippies and rich liberals and one of the most liberal counties in the country, wanted to be included in that referendum. The other counties told them to pound sand, that Marin represented exactly what they were trying to get away from.

When you get an hour's drive out of the big metro areas CA gets much more conservative, at least middle of the road. The huge population centers are more liberal and rule the whole state by sheer weight of numbers, much like Pennsylvania. The conservative rural areas of both states would love to be free of the cities overpowering influence.
