I'm tracking with you on everything but the "upgradeable" bit. Macs are upgradeable. No, wait, sorry. They don't need to be upgraded because there's no upgrade from AWESOME.

Looks to me like some little weenie has Mac envy. ;)

Dude, don't be a hater! LOL

The only real advantage to a Mac is and idiot proof OS, and getting a remote UNIX administrator for your system when you pay for full Apple Care ... a geek will host in from Cupertino to fix your shit.

If you can live without that level of support, you can get that $1400 system for $1300 with a free copy of Ubuntu, and have something just as secure and easy to use.

OSX and Darwin are just reworked Mach Kernal NeXT software.

Hey Clem, I think a better analogy would be teh Porche Suv and a Jeep.

So, the Mac actually costs only $5900, since you're going to buy a computer, anyway.

Back in the mid '90s, my brother-in-law was a programing and marketing exec. for IBM Global Services. He told me back then that within 10 years they were anticipating a merger of sorts between Macs and PCs. I knew it was inevitable, but I had such a hard time believing it. Lo and behold, today I have a box that runs nearly all OS' and for what it's worth, I always find myself back on XP. Go figure.

Excellent analysis, Rodge.

You know how crappy PCs are, when Apple can sell the equivalent hardware for 5X.

It really is a small premium to save 1% of your entire life—the time it takes to service a PC.

Whichever floats your boat...

I drive a stick shift vehicle. I've always owned stick-shifts. I hate automatics. IMO they're for lazy people. Guess what brand of computer I own (all 4 of them).

Too funny. If macs are so flawless then why do sites like http://reviews.cnet.com/macfixit/?tag=mfiredir aka the macfixitforum exist. Correcting such problems Finder not opening files when double clicked or the newest patch fixing PROBLEMS with the iSight camera or the non functional turn airport on/off settings. Oh and about that no-virus nonsense, let's go right to the source, Apple itself. Here's a little note they sent out:

"Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult"

You can find that one here: http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=2242

The only reason that Apple can give the "it just works" bs is snake oil is so easily sold. Just look at Obama.

Clem, the only people who complain about Posches being so expensive can't afford them. Then again, some of us just don't care to own a hopped up VW.

I started out several years ago with an I mac , moved up to a G 4 , and now have a Mac Book pro . My fiance is a regional v p for a large real estate company , and I can not keep her off of my Mac ! She is amazed at how much better it is than her work computers ! I have never used a p c , and judging from others reaction to my Mac . I see no need to ! If it's good enough for Rush ! Why bother changing ? smibsid

I've owned countless Macs since their inception. Yes, there have been a few hiccups along the way, but I've run a 50+ employee small biz on Macs since 1989. Never had to hire IT or tech support. Never. And that's what makes windoze geeks feel so threatened. None of their Mac friends call them for ego inflating tech support. In the end, it's like immigration: nobody's migrating from Mac to PC. /smug

You're out of your mind if you pay that much for a MAC. I bought a loaded MacBook Pro 5 months ago with all the bells and wistles I could get my hands on. The total cost was $2500.

Incidentally, I was a PC guy for the past 15 years. I will never go back there. My Mac is infinitely better than my Dell.

I bought a Mac Mini wen they first rolled out about 4 1/2 years ago. I wanted to see what all the brouhaha was.

No, I am not going to state that it gave me a whiter, brighter wash, or improve my love life, or any of the rest of the Mac fanboi stuff. I just liked how it let me do what i wanted to do, and not be clunky about it.

Since then, I've been buying Macs. I have a MacBook Pro, and a 24" iMac. The Mac Pro is not only way out of my price range, but has capacity far beyond my needs.

The few times I have needed any technical advice, I got it, in American English, and the advice went beyond "reload your system". My one hardware failure (hard disc) was repaired in half an hour.

Here's why PCs are better than Macs: When was the last time you saw a Ford commercial where THE ONLY THING they had to say was how bad Chevys suck?

The Mac/Liberal vs PC/Conservative parallels are extensive, as well.

I work on both platforms everyday, and while there are things about the Mac I like better than a PC, I'll NEVER purchase any product made by Apple. I want a computer which can do anything I want it to do; and one that when an error happens will give me error messages that actually tell me something.

If I wanted something that only allowed me to do what it thinks I should do and gives me no useful info when something goes wrong, I would be a Democrat.

Anon 2112:

You are working on old data there. The old motorola Macs form 20 years ago did have an OS you couldn't easily work on under the hood.

But OSX is a version of UNIX. If you want to deal with something yourself, you can, by just logging in as root. error messages are in the log files, right where every other UNIX system puts them.
