... enforcement action by a weapons dealer?

Déjà vu
This whole thing ...  just doesn't pass the smell test with me. There are far too many "convenient" things going on: being seen by cameras, ...  somehow knowing all this so quickly, the dead guy being a bit of a problem for some people, and the whole thing being conveniently ... .

No, not JFK's assassination ... this.

The Russians killing the Hamas leader and pinning it on Mossad seems more likely than Israeli's just competently jeopardizing diplomatic and security ties with Britain. Unless this Hamas guy was deliver nukes to/from Iran. Then all bets are off.
Interesting.

Lucky me, I still had that tab open

"20100220 08:23 OldSpook Pappy, you have a point. "

This whole thing in Dubai just doesn't pass the smell test with me. There are far too many "convenient" things going on: being seen by cameras, Dubai somehow knowing all this so quickly, the dead guy being a bit of a problem for some people, and the whole thing being conveniently "Mossad". "

Its entirely too neat. I think the US and Press have been looking at this from the wrong point of view, and have been part of the misdirection."

Ask yourself this: Cui bono?"

Then consider the following..."

Consider that the dead guy's main activity was arranging arms deals and smuggling weapons. And his personal activities were beginning to draw attention from some authorities that might otherwise look the other way in that region, or who would be concerned that such outside activities might be enough to attract serious US attention. That makes him a problem. Add to that Hamas is not exactly well known for changing people out due to outside pressure other than from Tehran. So how do you solve that problem?"

This is smelling more like an enforcement action by a weapons dealer with the tacit "blind eye" of UAE security. The distraction team, unlike the Mossad, didn't care that they might be observed on multiple cameras, were in and out in a rather brutal and straight up way (note that they never actually saw the kill team). As Pappy notes, they appear to be Eastern European types, which brings to mind the question: where was this dead guy getting his arms? Hint: Not the Chinese... Think former KGB."

Furthermore, using stolen Israeli IDs is a great misdirection move in that region because of the paranoia about the Mossad and hatred of Jews and Israel guarantees they will look no further than their "usual suspects". Plus the Israelis can neither confirm nor deny, as a matter of policy, so the misdirection will "stick". The people there will look no further for any sort of evidence; they have their bete noir to blame, and that's good enough for the feeble minded Arab public. As a bonus, it inflames things in the region which is good for even more arms sales."

If you view it as a business move: the Russians remove a troublesome element, and UAE gets rid of someone that they would rather have gone. The replacement Hamas guy is likely to be more circumspect, given the very public demise of his predecessor. The attention the videos brought will act "pour encourager les autres" in many places. And Israel ends up as the bad guy in the whole thing."

Viewed that way, this whole bit of Kabuki by the Dubai security services makes a bit more sense. Dropping the whole mess into Israel's lap by way of blaming "Mossad" s icing on the cake."

In sum, they got rid of the guy they wanted to have gone, have a good example for others that are giving them troubles, left someone else holding the bag, and are not accountable for any of it. Which is what a well designed op should be."

And recall that Putin was head of the KGB..."

Lets just say there is a sufficient amount of "hmmm" there, but not enough to actually prove anything to an actionable level."

That's the smell of a decent operation."

I also printed it out to show to one of my former spook buddies.

What? you don't think the Dubai intelligence service would want to keep tabs on their "guest"?
