The Maiden Heist heist

Stab me in the Liver!
The Maiden Heist

Boned Jello

So disinterested have I been in Hollywood movies that I kept our last NetFlix video for 9 monthes, and just returned it unwatched. At $9.95/mo subscription fee, $80 down the drain.  My quandry was, do I cancel Net Flix, or start using it ? Actually, I did use it during that period.  Instant views (which are restricted to older films, television, and anything starring Barbra Streisand).  MoSup does watch cable movies while I'm perusing the Hitler Channels, so I selected what appearded to be a can't miss film; one given 4.5 stars by my NetFlix  personal shopper (which btw is almost always right),   The Maiden Heist.
  • Christopher Walken
  • Morgan Freeman
  • William H Macy
Wow.  Was this the Academy Award winning film for 2009?   I didn't know.  With that cast it had to have at least been nominated, right?   I can't think of a film any of those three have appeared in that I haven't enjoyed.   You know where this is going.

This movie is the film version of the Washington Redskins.  A team owned by a guy with more money than brains,  who stocks it with every Pro Bowl player he can get his hands on, and loses.  Spectacularly.  Consistently. Loses. That was this movie.

The premise: three museum security guards, each of whom has developed an unnatural love (way unnatural) for a piece of art, that a villainous new curator is about to send to Denmark, decide to steal them.   Good premise.  However, aside from being agonizingly slow-paced,  it stinks.   How bad was it?  About 45 minutes into this 90 minute opus, I started fast-forwarding.  Mo Sup thanked me.  I don't know who to blame for this disaster;  the screenwriters, or the director?   Maybe TUA at SondraK knows, she being my goto movie expert.  As you can see, I gave it starstarstar on IMDB.  It's a fair rating.

The silver lining?  One of the previewed movies on this disc was HACHI, which MoSup suggested fors our next go. Oakley Doakely.

If you haven't watched this one yet, put in on your Netflix queue:

Citizen X

Its an HBO production from what I guess about 15 years back. It details the struggle of a forensic specialist in the Soviet Union as he attempts to apprehend a serial killer. A killer that per communist doctrine cannot exist in the worker's socialist paradise. Its based on a true story.

I've liked your past recommendations. I'll have to look Citizen X.

+1 on Citizen X; saw it when it was first on HBO many years ago.

The real lesson was, as I remember, the economy with which the perp was "isolated" from society.

Hachi, don't know the movie. Have known the story from AKC Akita. I love that breed.
Netflix is superior for their customer service, but I've canceled in the past because there just wasn't anything likable Hollywookie has put out lately. So, one must recall oldies to order. May I recommend, The Red Violin, 1998? Not an action movie, but plot driven and IMO it was a great story. Samuel L. never say "f". ;]

*says "f"

I rent a lot of TV shows. You usually get 4 episodes on each disc.

I just saw Hatchi for sale at the grocery store yesterday. I noted it because the name 'Hatchi' is the Japanese equivalent of 'Fido'.

Another good one you should check is Ip Man. It is a Chinese martial arts film with hardly any flying or any of the usual melodramatics of their films. It's about the guy that later became Bruce Lee's teacher. It takes place during the Japanese occupation during WWII. Unfortunately, it's subtitles only but if you like it, there is a sequel which is almost as good.

For $10/month, I get one DVD at a time, which often sits unwatched for a month or more. Although lately, it's been moving faster, as I'm already on disc 5 of "Band of Brothers". What I really keep the subscription for is the instant streaming, which is imho superb. I hadn't turned on cable until World Cup for months.

I'm sure you have see a littl jem from the '80's - "They Live" with Rowdy Roddy Piper. If you haven't, put it on your list.
