Light-bulb socialism

Bright Lights Done
in By Dim Bulbs

Boned Jello
“B eginning today, it is a crime to manufacture or ship for sale a traditional 75-watt incandescent light bulb in the European Union. Autocrats in Brussels last year declared war on Edison's greatest invention with a ban on 100-watt lamps. Homes throughout the Old World will continue to dim until incandescent lighting of all types is snuffed out in 2012 - the same year the United States is scheduled to begin a phaseout schedule mirroring the European plan. [... light-bulb socialism]
The enabling legislation was an early bellwether for what a Democrat congress was capable of,  after the 2006 elections gave them control.  Crafted by John Dingel, and signed, for god knows what reason, by Bush, it was a victory for the now discredited AGW movement. Fit nicely with Democrat distaste for bright lighting, too.
Dingel's Bright Idea
If you've tried to purchase 100, or even 75 watt incandescent light bulbs lately, you know that manufacturers, cued no doubt by retailers, are already in compliance.  The ceiling floods we've been forced to buy are a disaster.  Switch on the kitchen light, and wait about 5 minutes.  That's how long it takes before full brightness is achieved.  Add it to the list of things  that must be repealed.

Two years ago, New Zealanders faced an imminent ban. The National Party, at the time in the minority, made overturning the light-bulb scheme a priority in its campaign against the ruling Labor government. The public responded favorably to the party that proclaimed that it "stands for freedom, choice, independence and ambition." In December 2008, the National Party  government overturned the light-bulb ban. Republican challengers seeking an edge over Democrats in November could learn a few things from the Kiwis. [ibid]

Yes I had to have My eyeglasses dark tented when I was in school. They are hell, feels like someone is taking your eye out with a melon baller and everything goes all fuzzy like a flash bulb went off in your face. but then there is also the nausea and the sensation of your scull being pealed open.

What do you find to be the best "medicine" for migraines?

Excedrin helps but unless you want a long list of side effects, I stay away from prescription meds as much as I can.

That's nothing, those of us who are pilots can look forward to the decreed death of 100LL in 2017, per the EPA. Goodbye aviation industry. Many will die from using non standard fuel.

Death to beaurocrats!

CFL's will disappear shortly too.

LEDs are already becoming cheap, last 10-30 times longer and consume 1/10th the power of CFL's. Plus with LEDs you get instant light and an unlimited spectrum of colors.

I won't cry about incandescents disappearing.....

LEDs are bright, but harsh. I prefer the warmness of incandescent light; and even more I enjoy having a freaking choice in the freaking matter.

I'm gonna' fill my garage with cases of 'em, wait a few years, sell 'em black market style for $100 a piece, and retire to Thailand.

Here in East Texas, an incandescent bulb is all that's needed to keep the well house warm in the winter. Without them, we will need to purchase a heater and use more electricity for no good reason.

Some of the stores try to justify the high pirce by saying that compact fluorescents are supposed to last "years". A few months ago I purchased a package of four. Two of them already burned out (in the appropriate-wattage lamp).

"Two of them already burned out (in the appropriate-wattage lamp)." Ya Know.. I've seen that a lot. I think they are bullshitting someone. We put some in my dads house because he couldn't get up to change the bulbs any longer. I don't know that we got any more life out of them. Piece of crap if you ask me.

I'd consider the LED ones of they would lose the blue tint.

Five minutes to warm up, eh? How many are gonna be like me, and say screw it, leave them on always. I'm American, and when I want light, I want it now.
Tech note: You can run all your lightbulbs for 24 hours and still not use as much power as drying one load of clothes.
