that salary'll getcha a 2-br, 6th-floor, rent-controlled walkup above a disco ... if you can find three roommates.

There's a principle here that never changes: Anything (that's right, anything) that is gained by coercion over someone is immoral. When A appoints B to steal from C, B can always count on the support of A.
