The Swedish King off to rape and pillage England

My son Greeper did this Me&23 DNA mapping thing, and the results were fascinating for him, and a mystery of sorts for me. According to his map, I am 100% Eastern European to include Finland etc., but almost totally of Swedish ancestry. Which means that somewhere along the line my maternal Granny's family (she emigrated from England) were influenced, ahem, by Norsemen raiders, most likely. There's all sort of genetic info to be gleaned from the results, like what diseases you are a carrier of, IQ stock, etc. In some cases identical twins separated at birth, and who underwnet the testing, were discovered. Same with cousins, etc. Not real sure about what all's involved, but it sure is interesting.

Anonymous said...: Just reading a book on Viking history. Around 862 Scandinavians arrived in Russia via the Gulf of Finland and the western Dvina. They learned Slavic languages and became known as Rus'. They built a system of communities from the Volga south to the steppe and traded south to Byzantium and eastward to the Bulgars. They regularly ran up various eastern European rivers from the Baltic and North Seas, portaged for miles, then made their way down the Volga, the Danube and the Dnieper Rivers. Around the same time the Norse were raiding, sometimes with hundreds of longships, up the Seine, all along the coasts of Great Britain, up the Rhine and the Oder. The locals they didn't slaughter were taken away as slaves, and yet at times the Vikings tried to make treaties with the local chieftains and kings to establish trade, but invariably a year or two later, fell to more slaughter, looting and slave taking.
Then they hit Detroit about ten years ago.
Anyhow, I haven't got to the part where Christianity begins to win over the pagans, but you can see how Celtic, Gaelic, Slavic and Scandinavian genes intermixed.
