64 Impala

Classics

I sent you some pics of my 1964 Impala , when I drive it people honk , wave , and jump out at lights to take pictures . My kids think they are rock stars when we ride to the ball games ! Oh , and my plates read "SMIBS" Southern Maryland In Bred'S ; ) > SMIBSID

I'm mad for car televison right now ( Chasing Classic Cars, Wheeler Dealers, What's my car worth, Mecum Auto Auctions, Wrecks to Riches, etc ...) so this was a special e-mail.  It's difficult to know what condition this '64 Impala is in, but I know it's worth in the neighborhood of $20,000 to $65,000 at auction.  So, Sid, you've got it all - a beautiful family and a classic car.  Please don't tell me there's a '57 Bel Air in the barn too.

In the day, I had a '64 Chevy Impala convertible, black with red interior, with a 283 V-8. Wish I still had it.

I bet you do Jim ... The closest I canme to owning a classic car was a 1966 Volkswagon Camper. Or, as me mum called it, "The family shame mobile."

Gramma had a '57 Belair, and gramps had a '58 Olds II with the rocket on the hood. It was yellow and white two-tone, and when he gave it to mom, they decided to paint it an extremely hideous green. The same color mom picked for the shag carpet in the living room. Still, they weren't democrats.

1951 Ford coupe with a flathead V-8.
I wanted so bad to put Offenhauser heads, 3 Stromberg's and dual exhausts with Thrush glass packs. Dad said: "get a job and keep your grades up."

-- sigh! -- Washed dishes at the local greasy spoon. My grades sucked.

Wish I had that huckleberry right now. Not quite as cool as the '49 and '50 with the cyclops grille.

I had one too in 1975. '64 SS 4 speed Maroon/Black. Crome Reverse w/ Baby Moons. Nice little not quite stock 350. It was stolen and found stripped in Little Mexico part of KCMO. I sold what was left of it bought a new Toyota Celica GT and never looked back.

I'd never have another one since my days of changing U-joints on the side of the road are long gone.

Hey Sven, my first car was a '50 Ford flathead. I too went with 3 Stromberg's and an electic fuel pump. The thing developed so much torque when I stomped on it that I was forever busting rear axles. Got so I kept three-or four in the trunk and could change one in 15 minutes. O yeah! That was when I knew how to fix any damn thing on a car, and gas was 23.9/ gal ($5.00 today's money).

WOW ! Thanks for posting the pics of my "LUB MUCHEEN" ! She is bone stock with 47,00 original miles , a 283 , and a two speed powerglide transmission ! My A M radio will only pick up Rush Limbaugh , and I found an old "Wallace for President" bumper sticker that I'm going to put on the back ! LMFAO ! SMIBSID

In my college days I had a '63 Chevy Bel Air (283 automatic). Bought it second hand in '69 - put well over 100,000 miles on it during the next four years and it still ran like a clock when I turned it over to my kid brother - he drove it for at least three more years. We both pounded the hell out of it - in my undegrad days I commuted about 30 miles each way to school, my girlfriend was another 20 miles past there, and it was all superhighway so the car spent a lot of time well over 80 miles an hour.

Earlier than than my folks had a 57 Bel Air (again 283 automatic) - loved that car but they eventually got rid of it. Sad day.

This is great stuff. I'm just waiting for you all to start in on how you walked five miles to school-- uphill both ways-- and candy bars cost a nickel.

'62 Impala SS. Light blue like this comment background. 327/4speed. Loved that car. Would still have it if my brother hadn't trashed it.

I live a few miles from the Chasing Classic Cars place. It really is awesome. They have open houses all the time, and so many wonderful cars there. It's a wonder that there aren't more accidents on that street. So many people drive by and turn their heads quickly and say something along the line of "hfs, is that a _____?!"

Oh, and as long as we're talking cars, I have a '71 Olds Cutlass Supreme convertible and a '51 Dodge M37. Both are waiting my attention. Need to finish building my house first. Or at least I need to finish building my garage with a lift in it.

New Guy,

Cigs were 25 cents a pack for the good'uns....Pall Mall straights.

We would parlay two to three bucks each out of whatever kinda extortion on younger brothers and the peeps. Ron Alcorn had a five o'clock shadow and thinning hair at age 16.

He bought the case of Grain Belt beer...the rest went to gas. Spring time and a Friday night woodsy on one of the creeks west of town....Heh!

uphill both ways? ...Nah! We did have a well house and the remnants of the ol' two holer out house on the downstream side of the well.

I have a 1973 Cougar XR7 conv with a 351C and a 1980 Rolls Royce Silver Wraith II. The Rolls is just a long wheel base Shadow, but is one of the last 5 that Rolls made and one of the last hand made coach built.. In 4 years, Rolls made 2200 of the critters with 11 of them being fuel injected. Mine is one of the eleven.
But it is the Coug that warms my heart. I am so ready for the rain to stop.

Oh ye, I had a set of Chevy jiggle keys and stole more 63 and 64 Impala's than I can remember. Got caught eventually and got my ass kicked big time. Have not stolen anything since.

My first car was a '63 Rambler American 2-door hardtop (with Nash seats). I pulled the 6-banger out and put in a balanced and blueprinted small block 400, a 4 speed with a floor shifter, dual exhaust with electric cutouts ahead of the mufflers and inset wheels with 50 series tires. I could sit at a light with the engine purring and have someone come alongside in a hot rod thinking they would smoke me when the light turned green. I had the timing down, and when the cross-traffic lights turned yellow, I would hit the cut outs & shift into 1st, then floor it when my light turned green. I left many pony cars in the dust that way. Also, the Nash seats were great for a little extra-curricular activity on a date. Ah, the good old days...

Dumbest car thing I ever did was sell my '67 Nova wagon when I went overseas in 2000. It was a factory original 327 with front disc brakes, seat belts and ac. Needed a good restoration, but everything was there and working. Best info I could find was less than 100 were built in that config in that year. Shoulda just put it into storage until I got back...
