Night Fighters

I am reminded

Night fighter

My dad told the story about a company of  colored tankers rolling into whatever German town he was in at the time.  He said they were very popular with the local women, who had never seen a black man before, and were utterly unaffected by race issues.  The tankers told the girls they were special "night fighters," and scored heavily.

Those Black tankers who had survived long enough to reach Germany in those Shermans had gotten gotten pretty good at taking on the heavier Germans from the flanks and behind. Their tank commanders were known for keeping their heads up and out of the turret even under small arms fire. I heard a rumor that when one was chastised for breaking the non fraternization rule (that hadn't been enacted yet) the enlisted man said he couldn't resist the opportunity to charge and engage the enemy from the front.

"the heavier Germans from the flanks and behind."

^JMcD,
Nah, they just always seem to be holding six or seven big steins of beer in front.
