Gee Dad! It's a Studebaker!

Or ..
You can buy a '57 Chevy

I never knew a single kid who wanted a Studebaker, or thought they were cool cars.

You never wanted an Avanti?

In my neighborhood, people who drove Studebakers were considered odd.

How they became cool would make a great plot if Mad Men ever moved over to the SciFi Channel for a time travel episode.

I forgot about the Avanti, actually. But,no, I did not want one if it meant I had to pay for it. It was a hell of a design though.

I am a few years younger; 57 chevys were around quite a bit. Went to a car show a few years back and saw my first Studebaker. They were drawing quite the crowd....

My first car was a '61 Hawk... paid $600 for it in 1968. I'd buy it back today for the same price too.

I met a guy with a white Silver Hawk a while back, that was a cool car. I wish I'd had my camera. He informed me of a Studebaker meeting the next day, which I attended, and did bring my camera. The nicest one there as actually an old restored Study truck.

I was too young. The older kids called them Stupidbakers.

A buddy and I went on a trip to all the car museums in OH, MI and IL a couple of years ago and went to the Studebaker Museum in South Bend, IL. GREAT place (did you know they built most of the Presidential carriges and autos up through the mid-20th? They even had Lincoln's carriage there that took him to Ford's Theater. They also built a lot of WWII vehicles and B-17 engines and have them there.)

Cool place.

I must be odd...I always liked the "Steadybreakers".

Would have loved to have an Avanti, even one of the ones built by an independent after Studebaker went Tango Uniform.

Bought a one owner 1963 Gran Turismo Hawk in 1970. Black with red trim. Dashboard like a cockpit. It had a 289 V-8 (mine didn't have the turbo) Very sporty and ran like a top.

Lasted almost three years until the water pump went out and by then out of production. Did find one on the west coast but the guy wanted $200 for it. That was a lot for a 10 year old part in 73.

Car certainly had character tho.

I owned three between 1955 and 1962. A '49, a '50, and a '55. All were used when purchased for a pittance. Most fun vehicles I ever owned until I bought a 1965 Mustang convertible (blue with white top and interior) in 1964. Traded the Mustang for a new GTO in '68 and the wife got it in the divorce, but at 5 to 7 MPG I didn't miss it. Since then I've mostly owned Cadillacs and Continentals.

It would be a difficult choice if I had to choose between the two tone black and white '55 Studebaker Champion and the '65 Mustang if I could purchase one today.

When my Dad died, he still had his first car. A '38 Olds, 2 door coupe. My brother ended up getting it. I got his 357 Ruger blackhawk. I would have rather have had the '38. It was rough too.
