She wrote it after she divorced What's His Name. I would bet the sentiment was heartfelt but at the same time it was a great way to CYA because I recall that What's His Name was a real power in Nashville at the time.
I'll go with Dolly's recording of the song too but the dead lady did do herself proud with it and made Dolly a ton of cash. -

I always tell the young athletes I coach - no matter what you do - do it with your whole heart. I think I'll show them this video as an example...
