Through Thick & Thin

This is something that, sadly, many of today's men and women will never experience. Marriage is meant to be a LIFETIME commitment - taking non-related people, and, by their public dedication of their intent, making them KIN to each other, and to their families.

With a lifetime bond, you have:
- relations outside of birth associations that will sustain you in times of trouble
- social, financial, emotional, physical, and intellectual sharing
- people to share with - joy, sorrow, excitement, tragedy, stupid "inside" jokes, and memories
- connections that you might otherwise never experience - sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles, grandparents - all come with that new family

BTW, if anyone thinks that I am over-romanticizing marriage for lack of experience, I've been married 39 - 1/2 years to the same man.

Milady & I have been a couple since 1961. Our grankritters consider it weird that their parents' parents still live together and actually talk to each other.

My 24 years in the USN very likely made things easier when we were younger because of the opportunity to get the hell out of each other's way from time to time and remain equal partners, with nobody assuming the primary role exclusively.

Reunions and refamiliarizations after 7-month deployments were nice, too. We just automatically allowed each other space and privacy and independence.

After 50 years, she's still my dream girl. I have no idea if I'm her dream guy, but we laugh together, we work well together, and we discuss stuff instead of fighting over money or politics or trivialities.

Purty nice life. Sure would like a do-over, same girl, same way, same places.

Been married for 25 years. My wife's been married for 15. The only way she'll leave is over my dead body. And with some of the meals she's cooked I think that's her plan.

I'm sure you would all enjoy Ovid's wonderful story of Baucis and Philemon. I have a nice story too.

When we were first acclimating to Florida's warm weather and skimpy attire, we took long beach walks every day to develop fashion legs. We see a lot of interesting things there. Once about 3 miles out, there was an elderly couple walking toward the shore. They both had canes and were moving very slowly arm-in-arm.

There was a high furrow left by a sand rake and the old guy couldn't step over it. My rescue instinct took hold and I veered toward them. Lovie pulled me back on course, because she is wise about these things. We passed them stuck at the furrow and I didn't think they would ever make it.

A few minutes later I looked back. Somehow, as if lifted by the hand of God, they had flown 100's of feet across the beach. The cans were left in the sand. He cradled her in the water as they laughed and splashed like newlyweds. I'm certain they were saints in disguise sent to give us a lesson. I call it the Miracle of Buoyancy. Lovie calls it Florida.
