A democrat, an Independent, and a Republican walk into a bar ...
Res Ipsa Loquitor

One of us is a Democrat; one, an independent; another, a Republican. Yet, together, we recognize several hard truths: Government spending levels are unsustainable. Higher taxes, however advisable or not, fail to come close to solving the problem. Discretionary spending must be reduced but without harming the safety net for our most vulnerable, or sacrificing future growth (e.g., research and education). Defense and homeland security spending should not be immune to reductions. Most consequentially, the growth in spending on entitlement programs—Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare—must be curbed.

These truths are not born of some zeal for austerity or unkindness, but of arithmetic. The growing debt burden threatens to crush the next generation of Americans.
[Generational Theft Needs to Be Arrested]

They could haveshould havestopped at "Government spending levels are unsustainable," because everything after that is more of what we've been hearing for 50 years+.
  • . Discretionary spending must be reduced but without harming the safety net for our most vulnerable, or sacrificing future growth (e.g., research and education).
Without harming the safety net .. is the phrase that sinks all ships. And future growth depends on government funding  education?  Forgive us millions while we laugh bitterly.
  • Defense and homeland security spending should not be immune to reductions.
Dept of Homeland Security as constituted is a bigger threat to the nation than Islamo fascists.  What they mean is, "We spend too much on defense."
  • Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare—must be curbed.
Curbed?  Have they heard of Obamacare?

I'm laughed out.

Why is it that the Republican Elephant doesn't really look THAT much different than the Democrat Donkey? Just a co-inky-dink? Cuzzin' Rick

"Have they heard of Obama care?" Apparently they have not. Bankrupt government and medical "exchanges" non-existent. Yep, we'll be looking great.

Oh. And. Love the douche-baggery politics. One party government?

I've quit referring to it as "Obama Care." Now I refer to it by its real name, "The Affordable Care Act."

It sounds a lot more sarcastic.

I read the WSJ piece – complete drivel. One party and half of the other is committed to destroying America. There is no "uniting for a common purpose" with Statists.

Real Americans, people who want to shrink the Federal government, must replace Statists in Congress. To do this, real Americans must co-opt the Republican Party, just as the Marxists co-opted the Democrat Party. We have two Republican Statists ripe for removal in 2014 -- Lindsay Graham of SC and Lamar Alexander of TN. Contribute to their primary challengers.

Even if it doesn't work out, you can say you tried. And you will have pissed off Democrats and that is worth something.

Hey!...I resemble that remark!

Please allow me to amend that last comment by stating I may have to eat shit and register as a Republican so I can vote in the Texas primaries next cycle. It didn't matter until recently and of course I blame all registered Republicans for f'ing up my bid for independents and of course my plausible deniability. If you want something done right....

A democrat with a frog on his head and an elephant with John McCain hanging off his ass walked into a bar and the bartender said, "What's going on here?" and the elephant said, "I just can't seem to shake this turd."

Oh, and the frog said, "Well see it all started out as a wart on my ass."
