That thing is as big as a WW2 heavy cruiser, but has something under 200 crew. Amazing.
It also costs more than a CVN did a few years ago. Not so good.

I always thought the CSS Virginia was named the Merrimac. But apparently that may have just been the Yankee textbooks. It does make sense they'd rename it as the Merrimac is a Yankee river.

One of my favorite monuments in Washington is the John Ericcson Memorial about 300 yards south of the Lincoln Memorial. He was a common man who did uncommon things including designing the USS Monitor. The monument says that he also designed the screw propeller.
