Whom do you trust?

Trusting Sicilians?
GOOGLE-SLAYER SETS SIGHTS ON NSA

A Stanford graduate student who has already stung Google for nearly $40 million over privacy violations is now targeting the National Security Agency, or NSA, to find out just how much the feds know about you.

The MetaPhone project asks volunteers to install an Android app that sends the researchers copies of a device’s call logs – much like the information collected by the NSA – and basic data from a person’s Facebook account.

“In the course of the study, your mobile phone will transmit device logs and social network information to researchers at Stanford University. Device data will include records about your recent calls and text messages. Social network data will include your profile, connections and recent activity.

The data will be stored and analyzed at Stanford, then deleted at the end of the study. [Full]

To paraphrase somebody. maybe me, people are wont to lose their freedom to government, and thank them each step of the way.  The question is, can we be sure that the Stanford student is a friend?  Well. there's two vials set before us.  One is filled with poison; the other ... ?

Here's two more from smart people

A government can't control the economy without controlling people. And they know when a government sets out to do that, it must use force and coercion to achieve its purpose. They also knew, those Founding Fathers, that outside of its legitimate functions, government does nothing as well or as economically as the private sector of the economy. Ronald Reagan, 1964

“I predict future happiness for Americans, if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.”  Thomas Jefferson

You only think I guessed wrong! That's what's so funny! I switched glasses when your back was turned! ... Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!! Ha ha ha-- plunk Vizzini:
