It
is our misfortune to like Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice
cream. I
can't help thinking those two limousine commies toyed with naming it
CHErry GUAVERA, but that's beside the point. It's MoSup's
favorite dessert
treat after spicy food, and it's premium
priced. Here's a recipe
I found,
and made.
The beauty part is that it can be in your freezer in 30
minutes, That's right, no cooking required. If you're
a pussy,
you're supposed to use irradiated eggs, but that's your silliness.
This recipe uses an ice cream maker.
I use a Cuisinart refurb
I bought from Woot for $144, 3 years
ago. It works except I have to put my heavy cast iron chicken
fryer on top to keep the motor engaged. I cannot for the life of
me see any "commercial" use for it, but caveat emptor.
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup shaved plain
chocolate (Hershey's
Special Dark Chocolate Trader Joe's Pound Plus Dark Chocolate
preferred)
- 1/4 cup fresh Bing cherries,
halved and pitted (you may use canned cherries, but be sure to drain
the syrup)
- 2 large eggs
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 cups heavy or whipping
cream
- 1 cup milk
Preparation:
Place the shaved chocolate
flakes and the cherries in separate bowls. Cover and
refrigerate.
Whisk the eggs in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy, 1 to 2 minutes.
Whisk in the sugar, a little at a time, then continue whisking until
completely blended, about 1 minute more. Pour in the cream and milk and
whisk to blend.
Transfer the mixture to an ice cream maker and freeze following
the manufacturer's instructions.
After the ice cream stiffens (about 2 minutes before it is
done), add the chocolate and the cherries, then
continue freezing until the ice cream is ready.
Yield: 1 quart
How does it taste? Like Cherry Garcia only better. I did
add the
cherries and chocolate too early though. Next time I'll add them
after
the machine is finished and the ice cream is still not hard
set. Bonus- I will use this basic recipe for all my home
made ice cream henceforth.
You're welcome.
