EAT ME APPLE

...Steve  Jobs’s successor at Apple, Tim Cook, was asked at the annual shareholder meeting by the NCPPR, the conservative finance group, to disclose the costs of Apple’s energy sustainability programs, and make a commitment to doing only those things that were profitable.

Mr. Cook replied –with an uncharacteristic display of emotion–that a return on investment (ROI) was not the primary consideration on such issues. ...  The company does “a lot of things for reasons besides profit motive. We want to leave the world better than we found it .... If you want me to do things only for ROI reasons, you should get out of this stock.” [Full]

When I saw this in March, I (like many of you) thought, "What a prick!"  So much for fiduciary responsibility.  And also an insight into Cook's character perhaps.  I'll make this short. 

Wife gave me a new iPad Air last week.  She, in turn, took my old iPad I (5.111).  I wiped it clean;  re-registered to her, and went about restoring  the apps I knew she'd enjoy. Like NetFlix, iBooks, Kindle, and a host of others.  But, guess what?  All of the afore mentioned, and many others,  were denied with the message "This App Requires ver 6 or Higher."  WTF?  I used these apps, on that box, last week. 

I'm not alone.

It gets worse.  Not only are there no Kindle or iBooks;  there are no book reader apps available. None. Once you give them up, there ain't no going back.  The plaintive cry across Apple land is—

"How can I read books on an IPAD1 with OS 5.1.1"

... you pricks!

Your AAPL posts are always among my faves. I got a chuckle out of Nature Boy's enviro-prattling too. What's the ROI on theatrical sincerity? This guy would power iPhones with Chinese toenails if they made a better battery.

But the real 800 pound gorilla in the room is you, as an Apple repeat customer. Their products are like GummyVites — addictive by good for you.

Helly, I obviously am happy with iPad; MoSup gave me a choice of any brand and I stayed with iPad. That said, I find the crappy way they treat customers so reprehensible that, if I could go back a week, I would be using a Samsung tablet as we speak.

You hate totalitarian regimes (e.g. ObamaCare, BLM, NSA, IRS) but you invite Apple products into your home?

Apple is THE most totalitarian system on the planet. But their products sure LOOK nice and WORK nicely... right up until you want to exercise a little individualism, as you just discovered.

There are many cogent reasons to dislike Microsoft et al (I once tossed a MS laptop into the pool out of pure frustration), but compared to Apple control freakery, other systems are pure Enlightenment.

Saying this kind of stuff is a lot easier since Steve Jobs is no longer around.

These tech giants got their marketshares by thinking and acting like hedge fund and pump and dump traders (i.e. predatorily).

They may wish to project the image of corporate good citizens, but I can't see that behavior pervading their halls of management when the media isn't around to cover them.

I've used Apple products, but have never purchased one (and never will). Their conceit and pretentiousness has always been too much.

Timmah's sole responsibility is to make money for his shareholders. To the extent he spends money on anything else, he commits fraud.

Of course, I don't own Apple stock so he isn't defrauding me. And his shareholders volunteer to be defrauded, so shame on them.

And yes, I will continue to buy Apple products.

It's fascinating to me how agitated people get over that interview when they never actually listened to it. Getting all hung up in Apple investing in "green" technology and Cook's response to the question, all while ignoring that he gave the very same answer to questions about why Apple invests so much in making their devices accessible to the disabled (did you know that you can navigate your iPad/iPhone simply by moving your head? Pretty convenient if you're a quadriplegic. And good luck trying that on a Samsung tab or a PC). Or why Apple invests so much to improve working conditions at its Asian suppliers. Or why Apple is investing so much to move manufacturing to the States (sapphire production in Arizona, Mac assembly in Texas, huge data center in N. Carolina, and countless retail and telephone support employees). He also pissed off the financial experts by refusing to capitalize on the company's iAd service to the detriment if its customers.

The company's sitting on $120+ billion in cash, and its earnings-per-share and OS adoption rates have climbed steadily upward. It's laughable to think Apple's fiduciary approach is "irresponsible". This is a company that can afford to do some things simply because it believes they're the right thing to do. This is also the same company that got tired of analysts expecting miracles every quarter, responding by saying they were going to be extra conservative in their reporting.

Oh, and that iOS 5 issue... it's actually very simple to grab older, compatible versions of the apps you'd previously downloaded. Restore from an iCloud backup (you can even use a profile from another iOS device), and the device will ask if you'd like to download a previous version of those apps.

I been using the damthings since the little box with the signatures inside... They were good. I continued cuz there are few skriptkiddies writing bugz n hax for the iCrap.

Now.... They drive dealers out of business, ya can't get one serviced anywhere but at their hipster-doosh stores and I got nowhere left to turn.
