'Interesting article. I've often wondered why Christians (as much as I, a Jew, am entitled to wonder about such matters) didn't "kill" or de-emphasize Santa, because Santa does seem to de-emphasize Christ as "the reason for the season".

At the same time, I'm not so cynical as to take "Let's Pretend" out of childhood. I think at a certain age kids can grasp that Santa and the Tooth Fairy are fiction but that God is real. (Or perhaps, for those of us who "cling" to our faith, God has to be real; otherwise, what's the point of life?)

But I wonder about your label "Prosthelytizing [sic] Atheists"; if there were a reason for that literary license, I couldn't find it. Did you mean to say "proselytizing"?

Fiction? That's your problem right there. Tomorrow the spirit of Saint Nicholas will overwhelm the world, inducing extraordinary behavior in children and adults. Many will die and many will be saved as a result. It doesn't get any more real than that.

The birth of Jesus plays no part in the Christmas celebrations of a very large (and growing) part of the population.
