The Lone Ranger

cinema à la carte

The Lone Ranger 2013

Had never heard of it.  Only gave it a shot because of Johnny Depp and Ruth Wilson.  What a joy.  You would never know it from this trailer, but this Lone Ranger has the spirit of  Little Big Man, a sprinkling of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, some The Wild Wild West, and did I say Ruth Wilson?  What a treat.  Not a great movie, but great fun.  (Silver is the real star)

Whew. I can see him as Tonto, but for a minute there I was afraid that Johnny Depp had been cast as The Lone Ranger! We dodged a silver bullet on that one!

There was some talk in Tinseltown of Johnny Depp (a man who uses more eyeshadow than Liz Taylor) starring as Paladin in a cinema remake of TV's Have Gun, Will Travel. Gimme a break! What an utter travesty that would be!

I"m not sure that anyone could hold a candle to Richard Boone's personification of Paladin, but it sure ain't Johnny Depp.

Glad you mentioned Richard Boone, a terrific actor. In the early 1960s he was doing filming in NYC. My old man was a cop, and got to talk with him. One thing that stuck with him is that Boone said he HATED horses!

Hmmm…Interesting, and also ironic, considering that Boone was a descendant of Daniel Boone, and that Paladin's backstory was that he'd been an officer in the Union cavalry!

HGWT ran from '58 to '62. If Boone was filming in NYC in the early '60s, it might have been for his groundbreaking TV repertory company, "The Richard Boone Show", 1963-64, which featured Robert Blake, Dean Stockwell and Harry Morgan, among others.

Oh dear. Usually I'm with you 100%, but not on this crap sandwich.

I grew up with the Lone Ranger; one episode where he had a perfect opportunity to shoot the bad guy in the back- but he didn't. Why not? 'Cause he was the good guy.

Depp and the other morons involved just pissed all over everything I remember and loved about the Lone Ranger. Depp made the Ranger a doofus; the indian did all the thinking; etc. Oh, but it's all better since Depp has a dead bird on his head. Yeah, right.

Total crap, that film, and I broke the disc I used to have so it doesn't accidentally get shown to kids I like. YMMV.

Sam Elliott as Paladin. Just the right attitude, look, humor. Ken Jeong as Hey Boy say no more.

just for chuckles...x

Many "Have Gun-Will Travel" episodes on YouTube. And OBTW, can someone tell me how 50+ year old TV shows end up on YouTube? I mean, who has video recordings of "The Real McCoys" laying around? I watch METV often and they play some great vintage shows (and some not so great) but YouTube has tons of very old, obscure shows.

Nah. Sam Elliot is great, but I don't see him representing the sophisticated, erudite qualities of Paladin; the Paladin who lives in a San Francisco hotel, who wears clothes tailored by Brooks Bros., who squires ladies to the opera, enjoys fine Bourbon and cigars, and can play chess in the style of history's great military leaders.
