At one of the Gettysburg get-togethers, maybe this one, there was a re-enactment of Pickett's Charge. As it proceeded, the old men who fought the battle, on both sides, were brought to tears. They could see that the Charge was suicide, which they didn't see the first time it happened. The former Union soldiers were crying in total disbelief. The former Confederate soldiers were crying at the horrible sacrifice their comrade's made.

Since retiring the old duffle bag, I started doing geanology research. The wife's GGgrandfather severed on both sides of the Civil War, I discovered while doing research.

He enlisted in the Confederate Army in Tennessee, was captured in Dunlop, TN after a battle. He was sent to the Military Prison in Louisville, KY. Then sent to Camp Chase, Ohio and later sent to Rock Island, Illinois. In total he was held as a POW for almost two years.

Both sides would on occasion exchange prisoners but found out they would return to the battlefield. The Union Army stopped the practice and instead started another program.

The would offer confederate prisoners a opportunity to "enlist in the Union Army" and be sent out west to protect Telegraph Lines, fight the Indians and reinforce Union Outpost.

They were referred too as "Galvanized Yankees" He served in the 2nd U.S. Vol Army. I've managed to obtain his Enlistment Record from Rock Island and copies of his prison records from the three prisions he was held at.

He returned to Tennessee at the conclusion of the war. He held positions as a Surveyor, Peace Officer and a Postmaster.

The thing that made Pickett's Charge horrible was Vermonters shooting down from the High Water Mark. Very few Confederates had a chance to shoot back. There's a reason why America's most Liberal communist Senator doesn't support gun control: Vermonters will travel anywhere to shoot people.
