BANG

Well, this here Windows 8 got so corrupted that I haven't been able to update for months and as a result everything is molasses slow. In a pique I just went ahead and wiped the slate clean.  That's where I'm at.  Sitting here in the woods with nothing.  And without any real interest in jumping through all those hoops.  I thought I'd backed everything up with DXMXL- it said I did-but now it shows "empty file." Crap

Writing in Righteous Indignation, Breitbart noted that, “the left doesn’t win its battles in debate. It doesn’t have to. In the 21st century, media is everything. The left wins because it controls the narrative. The narrative is controlled by the media. The left is the media and narrative is everything.”

Windows 10 is coming July 29. I'm in line for a download but I'm going to wait to hear how others are fairing.

Windows 8. Might as well turn your mind upside down and shake it. Let everything you know about 'Windoze' fall on the floor.
God, I hate these people that HAVE to invent new ways to do the same thing over and over and over. Guess their rice bowl depends on making the rest of us suffer.
I am sticking with windows 98SE. I know how it works. I would have stayed with 95 except for USB. Hmm maybe I can get it to work now.

My wife got a computer preloaded with Windows 8. The next day it was updated to 8.1. The very next day, it was erased, reformatted and Ubuntu was installed. Linux has come a long way, and Ubuntu is brain dead simple to use. She hasn't looked back.

I suggest (once again) 'get a Mac,' but let's be real. Part of being the World's Greatest Blogger is posting with one hand tied behind your back. So to speak.

Tom Mann, if I download W10 to replace my W8.1, will I lose and files or programs?

I've got two Mac Minis. They are a great and cheap way to explore the Apple experience. Plus, you now get free upgrades to the operating system. You can plug in your existing mouse, keyboard, and monitors to the roughly 7 inch square x 2 inch high device. My older model acts as a general purpose machine, and the newer one also can be booted in Windows 7 Professional, which allows me to rud a high end 3D CAD program. I am happy.

Skoonj,

I have to idea how well it will work, but when I transferred from xp to Windows 7 I was shocked at home smoothly it went.

Still, I'm going to wait to see how others do before changing. I'll also back-up everything to an external hard drive and carbonite.

If you have to use Windows, use Win7.

Maybe Win10 will fix problems with Win8.xm but I'm not holding my breath. Win 8.x is an abortion.

I'd get a Mac.

Dang it, kid.
Win8 also has 'system image backup'. Foolfriendly and foolproof. Use it and never be discombobulated again.
Every patch Tuesday, I reload the last made image, update, then make a new image.
I've been using the same Win7 install with this method for years. My Win8 tablet joined the fray last year. Flawless.

I'd like to second the vote for Ubuntu. Ridiculously simple installation, fast and secure, it doesn't take very long to learn, and just about any program you would ever need is free.

Linux MINT 17 here, boss. Download and burn a DVD iso image and installation is so easy a caveman can do it.

That's why I stuck with Windows 7.

I read the reviews of the guys that used the versions while it was being developed for release and avoided it like the plague...

...hearing more positive about 10.

I recommend that if you switch to Linux, you pick an LTS (Long Term Support) version. They promise patches and security support for 10 years on the LTS versions. The in-between versions are upgrades every 6-12 months.
FWIW, the auto-import in the photo app included in Ubuntu was so good that I sent a separate donation to the group responsible. That;s the first time I've done that.

I just installed a developer's copy of 10 in a virtual machine on my new laptop (8.1) 8.1 pisses me off for all of the reasons stated above. 10 it a bit better, but 7 it still my favorite.

I *could* load Linux, then run *Win* as the virtual machine, but if I can get Linux to do everything I want, why bother?

We shall see...

I dropped Windows awjhile back and installed Linux. It works just great -- It updates itself every day if necessary and squeekly clean to operate. I see no way that I will ever go back to Window.
