Immigrnts (legal) and Cobblers

cinema à la carte

2 movies I had seen earlier warrented a second viewing because I knew MoSup would love them.  She did.

First; if I only had access to one cable channel, it's Smithsonian.  For example, I just watched a Mighty Ships episode (S2E5) "USS NIMITZ" I've seen other profiles of the Nimitz, but this has depth the others lack.  It also triggered a massive flow of endorphins.  The lineup is great, the photography often breathtaking, and the direction perfect. Now, 2 movies.

The Immigrant.

Academy Award®-winner Marion Cotillard stars alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner in this gripping story of a fractured American dream. When Ewa  and her sister Magda  arrive at Ellis Island, doctors discover that Magda is ill and must be quarantined. Ewa is released onto the mean streets of Manhattan alone, where she quickly falls prey to Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix), a charming but wicked man who takes her in and forces her into prostitution. Just as Ewa thinks all hope is lost, debonair magician Orlando arrives and sweeps her off her feet. Though the two men are cousins, Orlando may be Ewa's only chance to escape the nightmare of Bruno's brutality.

Ewa reminds me of my wife (also of Polish extraction).  My maternal grandparents also came in through Ellis Island, and there are details here that  were new to me. Like, Caruso Caruso was, as portrayed, among the entertainers who entertained  immigants who were "on hold" status, and were likely eventually deported.  I gave it 5 Stars. Netflix and Amazon.

The Cobbler.

Max Simkin repairs shoes in the same New York shop that has been in his family for generations. Disenchanted with the grind of daily life, Max stumbles upon a magical heirloom that allows him to step into the lives of his customers and see the world in a new way. Sometimes walking in another man's shoes is the only way one can discover who they really are.
, Dustin Hoffman
The Cobbler was so good that I also sat through that for a second time while MoSup watched it.  She loved it too.   yard?  5 Stars.
But, WAIT!

The Cobbler (2015) - Rotten Tomatoes

Rotten Tomatoes
 Rating: 9% - ‎57 votes
Critics Consensus: The Cobbler represents a slight step up from
Adam Sandler's recent comedies, but while its cloying sentiment proves a more palatable ...

"Cloying sentiment," or "excessive? sweetness" are pretty much hallmarks for all Sandler movies.  My son Huck had, for years, recommended every Sandler movie that came along.  I'd watch them and think, meh, okay.  But over time I realized that I was always left with a feel-good, positive outlook on our society after watching them. Sandler, whose SNL persona as the singing Italian dude left me cold, is probably a good person in real life.  And I enjoy his movies. No mean feat, that.

Anyway, I also enjoyed Sandler's "CLICK," and just now noticed that Rotten Tomatoes killed that too, with 1½ Rotten Tomtoes.  I gave it 4 stars.  How in the hell have our taste in movies strayed this far out the barn?  Lotta ratbastards out there I guess.

Just watched "The Sea Hawk (1940)" with Errol Flynn and enjoyed it. Afterwards I stumbled upon a Guardian review giving it a C and calling it anti-Nazi propaganda. You just can't please some people.

I trust your reviews over the Netflix "STARS". Will try these this week. I think Jerry Clower had a punch line "what's time to a pig......".

Fishwife and I watched "The Cobbler" last night at your suggestion.
Sorry, Your Highness, in my opinion it still falls into the same category as almost all other Adam Sandler movies:
"Interesting story idea. Poor execution"
Wanted to like it, but was left decidedly "Meh."

We have higher hopes for "The Immigrant".

We don't care for Adam Sandler, no matter what he's in.

Oh, wait a minute! Adam Sandler is OK; it's that Andy Samberg we cannot-fucking-stand!

Ann Hedonia & Sam Paku

Ah, well; maybe I'm at the point where I need schmaltz.
