I'm probably not remembering this correctly, but IIRC didn't Ford buy a chunk of Mazda back in the early '70s? I seem to remember something about Ford wanting/needing to adopt some of the Japanese manufacturing/quality techniques that were eating their lunch and the family that owns Mazda was willing to share knowledge in exchange for a substantial cash infusion.

Ford had a partnership with Mazda that ended a couple of years ago. Everyone thought it was death to the little independent company.

Ford did save Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, & Volvo. They introduced modern manufacturing to some of them & clout in buying components for others. They have since sold off all of them.

People talk about Ford having an Aston Martin like grill. It's more like Aston Martin has a Ford like grill.
