That letter was a long time ago. Glad they're both still with us.

I'm sure some of you remember Pacific Southwest Airlines. Back-in-the-day, each and every one of their stewardesses would rate at not less than 12.5 on a scale of 1 to 10.

I was getting off one of their planes in San Francisco on my way to Viet Nam and one of these gals flashed a big old smile and said "we hope you fly with us again real soon."

I replied that I hoped so too, but it would be about a year. Her smile evaporated and she quietly asked if I was going over. I replied that I was, and she hesitated just a moment before flashing an even bigger smile and said well then, we'll see you when you get back.

That smile and brief display of concern was just what I needed at that moment. I've always hoped she's led a charmed life ever after, and married somebody with a lot of money who kept her safe and happy, and I've been kicking my own ass ever since for not having the snap to ask for her address and phone number. Just a little too preoccupied right then, or maybe just too young, dumb and ignorant. C'est la Guerre.
