‘LOOKS LIKE WEIMAR GERMANY’:

“

A now-viral photo showing a long line of Connecticut residents waiting to register their guns and ammo is circulating across the Internet — and it’s sending chills down the backs of some gun owners. [story]

Connecticut gun owners are rushing to register certain firearms and ammunition that will be considered illegal contraband in the new year.

Under a wide-ranging gun control law passed after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, they have until Tuesday to submit the paperwork with the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection.

“Holy crap. Looks like Weimar Germany,” Twitter user @votermom said of the photo.

“Another disgusting picture from Connecticut . . .men waiting in line to register guns with the government,” user @chipwoods commented.

“First, they came for the guns,” @PaulRReyes added.

“Life is too short to live in a state that does this to its residents,” Twitter user @lancemfisher declared.

And there are plenty more comments where that came from.

State police say they’ve had people lining up early in the morning to turn in applications to keep high-capacity magazines that hold more than 10 rounds and guns considered assault weapons under the new law.

While the Connecticut Citizens Defense League believes the law is unconstitutional, it has been reminding gun owners of the deadline to make sure they don’t become felons on Jan. 1.

Germans Celebrate New Year’s Eve with ‘Dinner for One’
Great Fun
“

We went to a New Year Eve's party here in Cuenca last night that was hosted by some friends of ours that are German.  Bill and Elke have been watching this thing every year, since they teens, when it was released in 1963. -

Cuzzin Ricky and Cuzzin Lady Friend

Do you know who Freddie Frinton was? Or May Warden? Nope. Don’t feel so bad. If English is your native language and you live in the US or the UK, then you’re not alone. But a German would likely know the names, or surely at least know their most famous characters.

Mr. Frinton and Ms. Warden, who died in 1968 and 1978 respectively, truly would have been forgotten were it not for their roles in a short, slapstick comedy called “Dinner for One” that almost inexplicably is a staple of German television on New Year’s Eve. Versions of it are also shown near the end of the year in other northern European countries.

The sketch, also called “The Ninetieth Birthday,” profiles the elderly Miss Sophie, a seeming scion of the English aristocracy as she celebrates her 90th birthday with four friends and her butler James. The odd thing though is that her friends are all long since dead.

I had never seen this before; all I could think about was it is was tailor made for Carol Burnett and Tim Conway (not that they could have improved on it.)

A few weeks ago I posted about discovering Spark Notes while searching for St. Augustine's Confessions.  That begat Spark's  wonderful, and quite thorough  cheater notes, which then led to this Yale University class discussion of the same topic (right). which begat the startling discovery that Harvard, Princeton, Stanford,  MIT,  all, to some extent, offer  (free) online education.

If you take these resources, along with the Khan Academy, you see that it is very possible to educate at home
—yes, even with the Liberal spin one is likely to get.  What a wonderful way to inoculate your child against the unavoidable, and caustic attacks on our culture than exposing with rebuttal?  You can't do that if they're sleeping in New Haven.

Another surprise for me was that Yale offer courses on Western Civilization at all.  After the school returned the $20 million Bass Grant in 1995, rather than give Eli Bass a thumbs up/down on who taught Western Civ under his grant, I was left with feeling that Yale had simply refused to teach Western Civ at all—a not unreasonable assumption given the school's, by then, known penchant for passing everything through  a Marxist prism.

A lecture series I am now listening too is INTRODUCTION TO THE OLD TESTAMENT (HEBREW BIBLE).  It's not a religious, but a cultural examination of the Bible's influence on civilization. Most of the class are male, and I know all too well how distracting a not unattractive,  probably lesbian, but braless instructor can have on us.  It's somewhat of a conundrum this; having impure thoughts while reading the Bible.  But maybe that's just me.

Or, as an alternative, immerse yourself  in this.

OBAMA RATED 5th BEST PRESIDENT IN OUR HISTORY
Washington, Lincoln, Coolidge, Reagan, and—  Obama?

From a total of 44 US Presidents: Obama is rated as the 5th best President ever! The A&M's Public Relations Office released the following statement, "...after only 5 years in office, Americans have rated President Obama the 5th best President ever."

The details according to TEXAS A&M

#1. Reagan & Lincoln tied for first,

#2. Twenty three presidents tied for second,

#3. Seventeen other presidents tied for third,

#4. Jimmy Carter came in fourth, and

#5. Obama came in fifth!

This appears to be totally reasonable . . . . .

What the engineer spends

“

So here's what happens next. The engineer probably doesn't spend anywhere near what he earns. He incorporates in a low tax jurisdiction, has his fees paid to that corporation, takes out $18,000 / annum.

To the extent any of that is illegal, he ignores the law and does it anyway. He's an intelligent man and gets good legal advice from a foreign lawyer and has so many cut outs, dead ends and silly nonsense in his paper trail that the risk is acceptable. he can do all this without telling one lie.

I know. I'm the foreign lawyer. I used to do this regularly in Canada for Europeans, but now my lawyer buddies (I'm retired) tell me they are getting lots of American business.

The USA loses taxes and a pool of capital, both of which wind up in Canada.

Analogy and Allegory To The Rescue
You're Welcome

Pat Dollard introduced this video of leftists, wrathful over their failure to get Duck Dynasty thrown off the air, as "Typical Black MSNBC Racist Dyson Compares Phil Robertson To Sodomizer ..."

Aren't we at the point where any commentary containing the  letters MSNBC in the lede is fair warning of what's coming?  A Mack Sennett silent film, replete with Keystone cops and people dangling from tall buildings?  The Three Stooges poking each other in the eye?  For me, this Michael Eric Dyson (also an MSNBC All-Star) statement is  the money shot of the entire imbroglio.

"They have turned this into a matter of free speech;  the irony of that is they don't want more speech to counteract their negative vicious offensive and ..."

Beauty. And they are obviously able to see truth in their own bizarre logic.  It was right about here that I thought of another perfect analogy.  Perhaps  the most well known and referenced  clip from Plato's Republic is the Cave Allegory.  It strikes me as the perfect explanation for today's cloistered left.  From Wiki:

"Plato has Socrates describe a gathering of people who have lived chained to the wall of a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall by things passing in front of a fire behind them, and begin to ascribe names to these shadows. According to Plato's Socrates, the shadows are as close as the prisoners get to viewing reality."

When one of the chained is released into the real world, he is astounded.  When he goes back to the cave to tell his brethren that everything they've learned from the shadows is false, they would kill him if they could for questioning what they learned in Professor José Ángel Gutiérrez's classroom.

'Stuck in our own experiment':

Leader of trapped team insists polar ice is melting

“

Dec. 27, 2013: In this image provided by Australasian Antarctic Expedition/Footloose Fotography the Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy is trapped in thick Antarctic ice 1,500 nautical miles south of Hobart, Australia. (AP)

The leader of a scientific expedition whose ship remains stranded in Antarctic ice says the team, which set out to prove climate change, is "stuck in our own experiment."

But Chris Turney, a professor of climate change at Australia’s University of New South Wales, said it was “silly” to suggest he and 73 others aboard the MV Akademic Shokalskiy were trapped in ice they’d sought to prove had melted. He remained adamant that sea ice is melting, even as the boat remained trapped in frozen seas.

“We were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

- Professor Chris Turney, leader of trapped expedition

"We're stuck in our own experiment," the Australasian Antarctic Expedition said in a statement. We came to Antarctica to study how one of the biggest icebergs in the world has altered the system by trapping ice. We ... are now ourselves trapped by ice surrounding our ship.

"Sea ice is disappearing due to climate change, but here ice is building up," the Australasian Antarctic Expedition said in a statement.

Turney later told FoxNews.com the ice surrounding his ship is old, rather than recently formed, and likely from a particular 75 mile-long  iceberg that broke apart three years ago. Climate change may have prompted the iceberg to shatter and float into the previously open sea where the mostly Australian team finds itself stranded, Turney said.

“The ice was swept across to this area by the South-East wind, its pieces creating a knock-on domino effect,” Turney told FoxNews.com, speaking from a tent erected on the stranded ship’s top deck. “We were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

But the situation has global warming skeptics poking fun at the scientists.

“Cute how these Warmists who hate fossil fuels take a trip to the Antarctic to show just how horrible fossil-fueled climate change is, then need rescue from their fossil-fueled trip by other fossil-fueled ships and helicopters, which still can’t rescue them,” wrote one blogger on Pirate’s Covehttp://global.fncstatic.com/static/v/all/img/external-link.png.

The website Newsbustershttp://global.fncstatic.com/static/v/all/img/external-link.png said much of the media has bent over backward to avoid linking the ship’s current fate with its mission.

“Somewhere far, far to the south where it is summer, a group of global warming scientists are trapped in the Antarctic ice,” read a post on the site. “If you missed the irony of that situation, it is because much of the mainstream media has glossed over that rather inconvenient bit of hilarity.”

So far, ice breakers have been unable to get closer than 10 miles from the stranded ship, which is surrounded by ice up to 10 feet thick. Stuck since Christmas Eve, it is about 100 nautical miles east of the French base Dumont D'Urville, and about 1,500 nautical miles south of Brisbane.

Turney‘s team is studying climate change, as well as how wildlife is adapting to it. He noted that numerous penguins have traipsed across the ice from the nearby mainland to curiously observe the explorers.

A Chinese ice breaker was unable to reach the ship, and another vessel, the Australian icebreaker Aurora Australis, got to within 10 nautical miles of the stranded ship but couldn’t see it through a driving blizzard, and had to turn back to open water. Turney told FoxNews.com his team is in good spirits, though it only has 10 days of food supplies.

Icebergs pose an even greater danger to the ship than the surface ice that now has the ship in its grip, because they can pierce the hull of a ship like the Akademic Shokalskiy, in a Titanic scenario . Lisa Martin, of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, which is coordinating rescue attempts from their New South Wales headquarters told FoxNews.com icebergs have been seen in the area.

‘There are icebergs around,” agreed Turney. “[The ship] is not a good position.”

The Aurora Australis is standing by in open water about 18 nautical miles east of the stranded ship, and could attempt another rescue once weather conditions improve, according to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

The best scenario for the scientists, agrees Turney, would be that the Aurora would be able to make a path through the ice, and somehow assist the Akademik Shokalskiy’s crew to turn their vessel around – not the easiest task when hemmed in by solid pack ice – so that it could follow the Australian icebreaker back into the safety of open water, and all the expedition’s passengers could stay comfortably on board.

But indications are that the 74 will have to be evacuated. Turney says that the captain of the Aurora has already offered specialized storage space for samples collected during the expedition. And a helicopter from a nearby Chinese ship is standing by to land on the ice next to the stranded ship and transfer the team, sources say, probably to the Aurora. [FoxNews.com]

"It is so funny to listen to these warmists, who have to be rescued from their own folly.  All the while insisting global warming is melting the very ice they are stuck in.  And now they have to rely on icebreakers powered by the fossil fuels they say is melting the ice!  I wonder who triple dog dared them to go there."
