Not as unlikely as you'd think. While I've never HEARD of that kind of heart surgery shipboard, they did have BRAIN surgery back then. Master and Commander did not make it up. (well... maybe shipboard -- the procedure was in existence, at any rate, but I'm not sure if it was ever done on board a ship_) I wouldn't be shocked to hear about heart surgery, too...

(wood might not work, though -- ivory or bone is more likely)

I dunno. You have to stop the heart, I'd think, in order to do that, and then restart it.

All in the wonderful ultra sanitary, non anethetisized, no anti-biotics, no antirejection drug world of the 18th century ship.

Nahhh.. They knew their limits.
