Oscars - a celecration of silly people

Oscars.  Mother Superior said she had them on in her sewing room when one of the songs (the winner, I take it) was being performed.  When  she heard ''It's hard being a pimp ...," she tuned out.  I told her I read that, in Clooney's acceptance speech - for his role in the anti-American movie Syriana, he told the assembled clunks that people blame Hollywood, because they are in the forefront of social change.  ''Exactly,'' she responded.

From ancient times, through early in the Twentieth century, actors occupied a social strata with pickpockets, carneys, and Gypsys.   How did we go so wrong?
