Teddy R, on Hyphenated Americans

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Agreed. People sometimes call me an Aussie to which I respond "no I'm American now".

While I do have some fondness for my country of birth I'd never attend a rally , or anything else, waving an Aussie flag. In fact I don't even own one (in any form). I do however fly a 3x5' American flag right outside my front door.

For some people, including a few at my own Naturalization ceremony, The Oath Of Allegance is just a bunch of words without meaning. For me they were spoken with full understanding and committment. In fact I consider myself more American than some others (e.g. RatbastardCommies).

This whole immigration debate is pissing me off. I spend the last 10 years jumping through all the legal hoops to get where I am and now these Congresscritters (D & R) are saying Pedro the pool boy can stay because he evaded (not that they ever loooked) the authorities all this time. I say fuck you Pedro do the paperwork like everyone else. If you don't want to then get the fuck out of MY counry asshole.

There, I feel (a bit) better now.

AO - For Pete's sake. All this time I thought you were still in Oz. Well said and congratulations on becoming an American citizen. Nice to have you here.
