''[British citizen] David Carruthers was
arrested in Dallas on July 16 while waiting with
his wife for a connecting flight to Costa Rica, where his company,
BetOnSports.com, has operations. He remains in jail ... The publicly
traded [British] company he used to run fired him ... .'' - WSJ.com - Arrested on a Bet

The Feds are using an ''outdated, irrelevant law [the 1961 Wire Act]
that is inapplicable and unenforceable for online gambling'' to hold
Carruthers for ''conspiring to run an illegal gambling operation'' Ironically, Rep. James Leach ( R IA) recently debated Carruthers on the 1961 law, and is trying to, but has not yet, update it. Where the hell, then, does the U.S. government
get off arresting a
foreign national who has broken no law, save in the minds of a few
gummint factotums? Here's the part I always like about
nanny gummint.
''Mr. Leach's legislation would expressly carve out gambling that is run
by government -- such as lotteries and state-run gambling on horse
races. Mr. Leach argues that these enterprises and private casinos are
more easily regulated than Web-based businesses ... .''

Poop. Leach's concern, IMO, is how to maximize the
government's (also known as ''the syndicate'') take on
gambling. And, if you want to outlaw gambling at the
Federal level, then outlaw it. That means Indians, Vegas,
Atlantic City, and state lotteries. Sheesh.
