The Megapixel Myth

The Megapixel Myth

Forget the silly debate over pixel counts among digital cameras. There is little visible difference between cameras with seemingly different ratings. For instance, a 3 MP camera pretty much looks the same as a 6 MP camera, even when blown up to 12 x 18!" I know because I've done this. Have you?

Bullshit, on several levels, although part of the basic premise is sound.

3MP is good (barely) to 8x10. There's a couple of PS Elements 4 tricks that can change that, show ready 24x36 prints being made from 6mp images after the upsizing, for instance, but by and large, 3MP is absolutely insufficient for anything larger than 8x10. I make enough of them in a day from a wide variety of camera's, I should know.

I've seen side by side comparisons of Canon's 5D with 4x5 film. The 5D wins, every time. Cheaper, faster, better images, etc. Using the above mentioned upside, the 5D's 12MP image easily smokes 4x5.

Anyone who has ever given an award for a Holga image is a fucking retard, no questions asked, end of discussion. They shouldn't be in the museum business, they shouldn't be in the art business, they shouldn't be out of their helmet, harness, and sippy cup. Shame on what the modern art world has become.

Viewed from a reasonable distance, my aching ass. Pictures have never been viewed from a reasonable distance. You want the best print possible, and if you can put down as much as 600 DPI, as on some of the new Fuji minilab printers, you do. If everyone knew the PS trick to upsizing, they would. If you could automate that process and include it in minilab equipment, people would demand it.

25MP to simulate 35mm film? Bullshit. Try 12. 8 from the Canon low end look better than all ISO400 35mm film, and most ISO 100. 12 from the 5D beats medium and some large format. These dinosaurs need to get over it.

The basic premise, that the MP wars are bullshit, is sound. This particular author just chose some pretty piss poor ways of expressing it.

For what it's worth, my carry camera is a Fuji F30, 6MP, and I routinely make absolutely stunning 10x15 prints from it, no editing. After upsizing, I could easily make gallery size 24x36's that would blow 35mm back into the last century, where it belongs. My Canon EOS 20D is even better.
