Sucking your cob the proper way

Today's Challenge
When I was a tad we were taught to only suck our corncobs on the horizontal, and never after the pudding had been served; how about you?   Your challenge is to discover what book might have prompted this young lady to throw caution to the wind, and gnaw - quite publicly - on the vertical.  I'll go first.
