Misguided Angst
The following essay has been excerpted from the German best-seller "World War for Wealth: The Global Grab for Power and Prosperity" by SPIEGEL editor Gabor Steingart. SPIEGEL ONLINE is publishing a series of daily excerpts from the book.
''In the West, gradual de-industrialization has created a new underclass of the unproductive and intellectually depraved. The spiritual cousin of the American phenomenon of "white trash," these strangers in their own land have become a serious threat to democracy.''

Wrong appeasment breath.  It's not "white trash," but "entitlement slaves,'' at which process Europe excels.  Anyway, why worry about it?   I believe Tony Blankley was correct when he stated  that "the West will have to decide which it values more: granting these rights and tolerance to those who wish to destroy us, or the survival of Western civilization." [The West's Last Chance: Will We Win the Clash of Civilizations? ] .  All evidence is that Europe is  belly-up to the Islamo threat.

I agree with you Roger, the author should restrict his denunciation to Europe and not the entire West.

The US successfully made the transition to a post industrial economy in the 1980s and early 1990s. The Reagan tax cuts gave America the capital to do so.

Europe has not successfully made the transition because of restrictive regulations, high taxes, high welfare payments, little capital and very powerful unions.

One of the strengths of the American economy is that we allow companies to fail so that people and capital can flow to promising new industries. Europe does not allow companies to fail because the government fears the wrath of the unions. This has created a severe shortage of venture capital in Europe.

All of the above problems have created a giant brain drain as Europe's best and brightest have come to the US to succeed in life.
