Where a cloistered liberal monastic explains the world

Reporter: Media should help set national agenda

<snip>

"I would argue the electronic and print media have more power than they did 50 years ago, but they turn over their space and time to events initiated by government officials and their critics," Pincus [Washington Post reporter Walter Pincus]  told a lunchtime crowd Monday at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service in Little Rock.

In contrast to the partisan press of the past, he said, most journalists neither desire nor believe that they can help shape government themselves.

"I believe this is a threat to democracy," he said. <snip>

An avowed Democrat, Pincus praised the conservative-leaning Rupert Murdoch for building a media empire that promotes a certain point of view.

"Fox [News, a Murdoch property ] gains viewers over a presumably neutral CNN partly because people want opinions," he said.
