IQ

DOH!
Spell Cat
On November 28 the American Enterprise Institute held a symposium on the persistent gap between the average IQ test scores of black and non-Hispanic white Americans. The question: Is the gap closing? The presenters at AEI were James Flynn, a philosopher who taught at the University of Otago in New Zealand, and Charles Murray, a scholar at AEI and the co-author of The Bell Curve.

Flynn .. offered an anecdote in which he contrasted the attitudes of Chinese, Jewish and black families toward academic accomplishment. According to Flynn, Chinese children come home and sit down and do their homework and their parents help. In Jewish households there is a lot of screaming, but eventually the kids sit down and do their homework. In black families, a kid sits down to do his homework and Dad comes home and says, “Hey, why don’t we go out back and shoot a couple of baskets.” “Children can tell the difference in parental enthusiasm for sports versus books,” he noted.

As a self-avowed socialist, Flynn is in favor of dramatically expanding all sorts of color-blind state interventions. For example, he wants government drop-in centers where parents of every race and class could bring their children for educational enrichment. He also said that he wanted to see more book clubs in the black community.

Murray, on the other hand, does not believe that there is much evidence that government educational interventions beyond some reasonably adequate level can permanently boost IQ test scores. Murray’s preferred policy is to forget group averages and encourage private and public institutions to treat people as individuals.  [Closing the Black/White IQ Gap?]

In my lifetime I've had my IQ measured from 115 to 160.  I had school counselors berate me for not performing at the top, and others who suggested a trade school might be a good option.  I've qualified for Mensa on the Wonderlic, and failed geometry.  My brain seems to have a rheostat which I have no control over. What does it all mean?  How the hell should I know - I'm running at 98 right now. That's enough to know that Murray is right, though.

Same here, Roger.

I can ( and have ) program whole websites using perl and Unix, but I failed a written test to become a clerk at 7-11. I have a four year degree but have never earned up to the national average for a person with my education and presumed intelligence.

As a machinist with 15 years I applied for a job with a machine shop but failed their aptitude test. I've tested at 120 IQ, but I have done some things in my life so dumb, it's a wonder to me I can even switch on a computer without slipping on the slobber.

BTW, how 'bout them Terps?

Badanov--

Been there, doing that. Don't worry about it, it's part of The Human Condition.

Am (was) always able to find gainful employment, but I swear, sometimes I need somebody to follow me around to keep me from getting my fingers caught in the machinery.

Heh. I once set a world record in IQ results, according to my mother. I was 2 years old at the time, mind, and part of a special program that my now-late father (A librarian at Cornell University at the time) had volunteered me for to study possible testing methods for pre-preschool children, so it was an 'unofficial' record. But it was a record.

Nowadays, I scrape 120-140 on 'official' IQ tests. I'm dyslexic (though never bothered to officially 'prove' my dyslexia to a doctor -- I don't need the documentation for anything, so why get it?), flunked out of my first college, (partly because I got fed up and quit attending classes, but that wasn't the brightest thing to do either), and never had straight A's from preschool through college. Since college, I've been self-employed, so I haven't had any 'testing' I've needed to take, but... well, I'm pretty certain IQ tests are relatively pointless.

Screw the IQ test. What we need is productive black citizens. Flynn is correct in saying that the main problem is the black culture's disdain for education.

The public schools make the situation even worse. Public schools believe that black kids are incapable of doing the work. So they do not challenge black children and have low expectations of their achievement. So the kids do what is asked of them-nothing.

I have seen this happen time and time again in Minneapolis. Take a non-performing black kid out of a public school and put him in a private school. The private school challenges the black kid and has high expectations of his achievement. Why? Because that is what they expect from all students-black or white. In almost every case, the black kid performs up to expectations.

The Democrats are responsible for the performance gap as they collude with the teachers' union to stop reform and school vouchers.

I've only been given three 'official' IQ tests. The first, at age 6, came back 'unmeasurable'. At 25, 198; at 39, 187. I'm clearly slipping as I age...

Ahh the internet where we all can be genius and look like Brad Spit or Madonna.I took an IQ test and the tester looked at it and ask me if it was my tennis score?

Yeah, when I get hand signals from the other driver's, I ask them if that's their IQ or what they scored on the driving test. wmprof
