iTunes sucks - Music Match is Boss

Eat Me Apple
I am struck with a  post holiday miasma of sorts, and doing other things.  One of them was getting my music files in order.  Somehow they got all screwed up.  I like to scan down the list if titles, but somehow they were rearranged into folders, and sub folders, so all I could see is the artist.

Wait ... there seems to be two of everything again?

Now I know who the culprit was.

I also had duplicates of almost everything.  I use Music Match music manager, and have for several years.  It's just great.  So, as soon as I had everything back in order, with sound levels evened out, album cover art restored, etc., etc., I said, okay, now I'll update Mother Superior's iPod. There were several new albums, and songs she wanted included, and I had those at the ready.  I had to first reinstall iTunes, which I'd deleted because every time I wanted to play a song, the damned iTunes had somehow reestablished QuickTime as the default player, so I just deleted it.  One installed I copied my music files to iTunes, hooked up the iPod, and installed the new library.

Guess Freaking What?

Apple, arrogant, overbearing, mofos that it is, assumes that anyone with an iPod will be overjoyed to do everything their way, so they took it upon themselves to rearrange MY MUSIC back to the condition I had jus spent days undoing.  Not only that, they duplicated every song.

I despise Apple Computer.  Compared to them, Microsoft is  benevolent, lovable, and solicitous teddy bear.  Let me tell you something else.  My daughter has an Apple, and spent hours and hours preparing different DVDs for every member of the family for Christmas.  Each contained a slide show of her photography, and an accompanying soundtrack of music she liked.  When she burned them ... using the wonderful MAC software everyone keeps telling me I need, it not only did not work, it deleted every freaking picture file.

Sheesh. Grrrrrrr.  Poop.  But, evil LOL, I burned a backup of my work, so goodbye iTunes - until she wants the iPod updated again in a year or so.

Ya, itunes sucks. I had the same *frustrating* experience a year or so ago when my wife got an ipod. My solution was to switch the ipod over to "mass storage mode" or something like that (it makes the ipod look like an external drive). I copied the files using windows explorer to the ipod, then ran some utility to update the song database on the unit.

My daughter just got a Sandisk Sansa E-series mp3 player, which I like a lot better. You have far more control over the thing than the ipod.

If you want to ditch iTunes (and who doesn't) use the free Winamp software and install the (also free) iPod plug-in for it. Works great, even on ancient Win98SE machines.

next time you need to update the ipod, start itunes, go to edit > preferences > advanced > and uncheck "Keep Itunes Music Folder organized"

It won't copy all your songs over again.

I just discovered Music Match Box and it is the best thing since sliced bread.

It's really not that hard to just actually read the settings panel and set things how you want them. *sigh*

I don't really see how it's "arrogant" of them to have default settings that aren't exactly what you want. You can just change the settings.
