Interesting. It reminded me of the famous "Cram it, Bozo" incident, so I looked that one up and was suprised that Snopes got it wrong. It occurred in Detroit. The guy playing Bozo was a man named Jerry Booth who later went to work in Chicago. I didn't see it myself but I remember every kid I knew and undoubtably every kid in the Detroit area was buzzing with it the next day.

We had a local kid show back in the 60's called Cousin Cliff, a lot like the Bozo format. In those days the black kids had the show all to themselves on Tuesday.
Welp, during one show while 'Ol Cuz was doing a commercial and all the children started laughing their butts off for no apparent reason.
When he finished his spot Cuz asked them what was so funny, and on live T.V. a girl spoke up and said; "Leroy farted"
From then on Cousin Cliff had the highest ratings on Tuesdays of any show on any station. -
