From the TV series, Just Shoot Me.
Shattered bottles of liquor littered the ground in this local Maryland liquor store. Behind the counter was a one armed, one legged one eyed man who'd fought in the American v Australian war. The man loved to go on about the boomerang shrapnel he took to his body, the C4 strapped kangaroos those vicious Aussies had used to warm Americans GI's hearts, before blowing them up...And I was always there to listen. The man had pour judgment. I'd come here from all over the country since I was eleven, buying mass quantities of alcohol with monopoly money, listening to the old mans stories. I'd seen Rodger Schultz around; walking in looking like a multi-hybrid John Wayne, George Washington and Fat Albert.
The spurs danging behind his liberal skin boots let off a shrill, cold sound as it hit the vomit and liquor covered floor. I'd always watched from afar, partially due to a fear for my safety, and partially the intolerable smell of gun powder and blood. But this time was different. I was right in front of the Valium and vodka mix, right where he happened to be heading. He stopped a few feet out, feet planting firmly on the floor, both hands dangling at his sides. As I caught his bloodshot eyes, I set my feet as well, one hand by my side. The devilish glare the man gave me brought on a harsh truth of what had to be done. By the way the cold smile on his face grew, I knew it was my move to be made. Fingers wiggling just by my side, something to drastically put the odds in my favor happened.
The man behind the counter flicked on the TV. Rosie O'Donnels shrill voice filled the liquor store, and the man flinched. I pulled my weapon and fired on his weapon, ripping it from the Insurgent skin holster. Realizing I'd won, I had a plan for the man. Reaching into my coat pocket, I retrieve a disposable camera, throwing it to the ground in front of him. 'Schultz...-' There was an uneasy silence, he looked at the camera expectantly. 'Before I do you in...I need some advice.'
Heyo. Shiz I'm bored. Ironically, in a dream last night after visiting your site, I had a dream that we had a gunfight. Lmao. Obviously I exaggerated it...And added some stupidness...As I do in all things...But it was a set up to my question. My birthday is the 3rd, and I really want a camera. You obviously are well kept on the ways of technology, sooo, how about some advice, boss?
Joshy boy.
Whew .. at first glance I thought you said "Before I do you."
What kind of camera? 35mm, Brownie?
No, I think he said "technology" and "camera" in the same sentence, therefore he couldn't have been discussing anything as quaint as film.
Josh, if you're looking for a good compact camera, nothing beats a Fuji F30, or if you want to get better people pictures, an F31fd. The F40fd is also out, and for a pretty decent price, but you do sacrifice a lot of control over your picture. The extra two megapixels should in no way influence your buying decisions, as six is plenty, and the lens doesn't resolve more than six anyway. My tests indicate little, if any difference in the picture quality. On the other hand, if you want to shoot in mostly Auto mode and get awesome people shots, the F40fd is an awesome buy.
If you want an ultrazoom, Sony, Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic and Fuji all have good models out. I use the Fuji S6000fd myself, same sensor as the F30, but with a 28-300mm equivalent lens. That wide angle manual zoom lens is quite frankly excellent. My wife uses the Fuji S5200, it doesn't start as wide, but it zooms farther, 38-380mm equivalent.
If you want a "real" digital camera, something you could, say, take to a family member's wedding and get professional looking results from, then I suggest getting an SLR body from whatever manufacturer you own lenses, if you already do. I use a Canon 20D myself, although I am considering selling my entire Canon kit and going with either a (whodathunkit!?!) Fuji S5 Pro or Olympus' next pro model. I'm only really considering Olympus because Leica is entering the 4/3 standard lens market, and will have a 14-150 (28-300mm equivalent on the 4/3 standard) out just about the time I'm ready to upgrade. That, and Olympus has color space nearly as good as Fuji.
Whatever you choose, good luck with it, and remember, Costco has the best photo labs in the country at the best prices.
Whups, forgot to plug the best camera advice site in the universe.

Digital Photography Review, you jackass.
Randy, if you decide to sell the Canon stuff, let me know. You can get my email from Rodger. (I hope hubby doesn't see this!)
I have a Rebel XT that I love and before that we had a Fuji S5000, Fuji makes great point and shoot cameras!

Awesome, thanks a ton Randy. :D
