FIOS TV

Final FIOS TV Report

Our FIOS (Verizon's Fiber Optiic System) is now, finally, working as promised.  The picture on our 38" analog TV is simply stunning.  Stunning.  IMO, Verizon FIOS is easily the best buy for internet and cable - er,  fiber optic television.  Verizon FIOS customer service, however,  is easily the worst I've experienced in several years.

We have one DVR installed, as we did with Direct TV, but there was a surprise here.  You can watch recorded content on any of the other three televisions.  Now I can watch Oprah, and Home and garden programming at my liesure  Wowwie.

The odd thing is that my Media Center PC will now only recognize the first 49 channels.  Since they are all local channels, I'm guessing that locals are   delived as compressed analog, so my tuner card can work with it.  But then, all of Direct TV satellite is digital, isn't it?  I had no problem with that?   No more Simpson clips till I figure it out.

Once Verizon has optic cable in every home I can't imagine how the competition can compete.  Oh wait.  Congress will hear the sound of all that Comcast and Hughes network coin landing on their desks,  and pass the 2010 Digital Fairness Act that makes Verizon give its competition equal access.  Either that, or some federal judge will do it by fiat. My advice is to go FIOS as soon as you can, from whoever,  It's stunning.

I guess I'll have to wait a couple years before it gets down here to Gawd's Country...

Beware Rodger -- this fiber optic thing is still somewhat experimental and there's one rather devistating bug for which there's no fix and, if encountered, it causes irreperable damage to both your TV and your psyche. You see, not even fiber optic cable has enough bandwidth to rasterscan Rosie O'Donnell's ugly fat ass for high-def viewing.
Avoid The View at all costs. You've been warned.

Rodg, I REALLY don't want to hear you gloat. I'm in Redneckistan (i.e. Calvert County) and there is NO FIOS IN SIGHT. I ring Verizon on a bi-weekly basis and there is nothing in the pipeline for me.

Seems kinda slow compared to broadband.
