As a Portland native and after spending 26 years of my life as a member of the other entity sometimes referred to as "Portland's Finest", let me say nobody could be sicker about this than I am. While I retain a residence there, I spend the bulk of my time on the east side of the Cascades where it's higher, drier and much more sane. With any luck, in a few months I'll be out of there entirely.

Hypothetically speaking, if someone waded into that group and beat the living shit out of one of those masked punks, how likely would a conviction be? I simply can't imagine there would be twelve people in the whole county who would find that person guilty. I know I wouldn't vote to convict, no matter how strong the evidence. Jury nullification, and all that. Sometimes "he deserved it" is a suitable defense.

Or maybe I'm just nieve and the whole world's gone to hell around me and I don't even see it.

I lived in Portland for the better part of 14 years. The dirty little secret about the place is: many of the natives who moan and whine about Californians are bigger Californians than Californians EVER were.
 

Reminds me of the late 1960s when some SDS-member student teachers from OSU came out to our suburban school. They tried to recruit everyone in their classes to take over the conservative farm High School.

Bunch of the football and FFA kids beat them and they never came back again (and no one charged the kids)....
