Canadian Gas Tax

Gas Attack in Our Upper Bowel

Quite simply, Canadian Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty has gone nuts, and the leaders of the energy trust business -- a very necessary and integral part of the fossil-fuel ecosystem in North America -- are going to have to rid themselves of the anti-competitive constraints of this government. ...

Flaherty is, in fact a divorce attorney from Winnipeg. He has no global finance background at all, and was a provincial finance minister prior to his current position.
 ...

Remember that the new plan (to impose a 31.5% tax on energy trusts) only applies to publicly traded trusts -- non-public entities are NOT subject to the tax. ...

P.S. To really see how messed up the Canadian government is, go to YouTube and check out Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's January 2006 pledge that the Conservatives "will not in any way attack business trusts." It really shows you how confused these guys have become.

I heard someone recently say that the we should change election day from Nov 2nd to April 16th - one day after tax filing deadline day.

Oh those nutty Canuk's, they have as much oil as Saudi Arabia stuck in shale but they'll manage to fuck it up. By the time the gov't lets them at it we'll be driving HHO powered cars. Ain't socialism a hoot.

That's because much of the money in these "trusts" belongs to foreign investors.
Of couse a lot of it is still Canadian retirees who, if this comes to pass, are going to get screwed even worse then when this idea was first anounced.
The stocks of these companies (and indeed the overall value of the Canadian market) dropped between 20 and 25% when this was first floated back in November of last year.
