The black rotary phone brings memories of when the USA had one phone company and it was a great one and the best in the world.Ma Bell. At&T.Great service.Rates weren't too bad.None of this,"we'll be out next week for service".Well,if some of the recent mergers are any indication,Ole Ma Bell is slowly coming back together.I doubt if that means any good news for the consumer. You really can't go back.Damn shame.

My mom still has a rotary phone out in the garage. I remember, living in Key West from '73-'78, that we only had to dial 5 digits. Our phone # was 474-7459, but being 8, I was glad to only have to dial 4-7459.
I just talked my mom into getting rid of the Princess-style Southern Bell touch tone phones only a couple/three months ago. Old folks are funny. - 5/5/07, 7:00 PM

(sound of needle being drug across a record)
What? I have an old telephone directory from the early 70s and right in the front the rates for long distance calls are listed:
1st minute - $1.32
additional minutes - $.092
Alaska, Hawaii and internation calls were several dollars(!) per minute, so yeah, I'd say things are a little better now.
Except that back then, in a pre-caller ID world, you could make prank calls without fear of being caught.
By the way, I've been VERY close to building one of these. Got all the parts... now if I can simply find a free weekend: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/present.php?p=Port-O-Rotary
Wonder if that'd get any strange looks passing through airport (in)security?

Actually Jack,I was thinking a lot further back...1940's..Should'a came forward...LOL.. Thanks.. Still liked the old Ma.Bell..Also back when, I could make a call in the state that was like local. Now a call 10 miles away is something called "local long distance"..gotta dial 1 and pay higher rate.
