An accepted belief of 19th century protestant religeous types was that Native Americans were decendants of the "Ten Lost Tribes" of Israel. Therefore they needed saving, made white protestants, or killed. Rev. Col. John Chivington who is given credit for the "Sand Creek Massacre" in southeast Colorado is an example.

So, in a twisted way I can see where Homer is coming from. Simpson, not the toga guy.
