Maryland is a liberal bastion, but still considers
itself patriotic. After voting against Desert Storm, for
instance, Sen. Barbara Mikulski felt it necessary, while seeking
reelection in 1992, to blanket the state with assertions that she
had backed the action. "Reelect Maryland's Little General"
was the radio message. It worked. So, while we are a politically
ignorant people, at heart we're USA-USA! I'm pretty sure
that if Baltimore's City Council scuttled the visit by three
naval ships, as part of this year's City Fair, the outrage would be
immediately felt. I mean, this is not Olympia, Washington.
