It was like watching a bloody tennis set!
I must admit I'm not completely up on the rules of American "football" but I always though only the quarterback could throw the ball, and only to a receiver.
Anybody can throw a forward pass as long as they haven't crossed the line where play began (line of scrimmage). A "lateral," or pass thrown backwards, or to the side, may theoretically be thrown all day long. However, if the ball hits the ground it's a free ball, and can be recovered by anyone, including the other team. There is seldom more than one lateral a play, so this was as far as I know a record.
Runnin' the ol' 15 lateral, aka the Mississippi Miracle, jes beautiful.
Yup ... laterals are almost unheard of, because you have to lose yardage to make sure it's done legally.
If you gain even an inch from the throw, you have screwed the pooch.
Being a big risk, they just aren't done.
But these kids had to either do it or lose ... I guess the inhibition against them went away after the first one was thrown.
That's worthy of a normal game of rugby.
Still, definately not something you see everyday in an American football game.
Good on them.
I love the defender gettting knocked out and his helmet blown off his head on the hit at the end. Right in the middle of field as the guy is running into the endzone. About 1:03 left on the tape.
The play took exactly 1 minute to transpire, very impressive.
