For
the past month, viewers of the Discovery Times Channel were bombarded
with promos for a just aired Ted Koppel special about our prison
population. The tag line was "The United States has a highest prison population than any nation in the world ... blah-blah-blah." Every time it aired I was compelled to hurl back a sarcasm to the inanimate TV screen.
What? Bigger even than Lichtenstein, or Poland?
Gee, Ted, where did you get that stat? By interviewing Chinese wardens?
Actually, I suspect that we do have a bigger prison population than China, but for reasons like this:
