The rear-guard action

'The first thing we do, let's kill the leftist media'.
(Act IV, Scene II)

I think even the dullest of us - and I include myself - have figured out what's happening to Fred Thompson.  He's getting the same treatment Hillary's involvement in the biggest criminal fundraising operation in American history received.  That is to say, complete silence. The media have effectively co-opted the Republican's nominating process by championing the two people who are most certain to lose  in the general election, Huckaboo and McCain, and ignoring Fred's candidacy altogether. More broadly, Jed Babbin figured it out too, and talks about it in Human Events, as discussed here, on NewsBusters.

The Associated Press -- once the gold standard of fast and accurate reporting -- changed during the Bush presidency. What was liberal bias has reshaped the wire service into one of the most politically activist media outlets. This is a cautionary tale for every Republican candidate. What AP tried to do to Fred Thompson is going to be repeated against any conservative candidate who exudes a whiff of conservatism in the primaries and whichever Republican gains the presidential nomination.

Babbin doesn't just make claims, either. He gives some very specific examples of AP's left leaning political activism. From their help given the John Kerry campaign to their tip ins for Hillary, Babbin gives us example after example of the APs bias against Republican and conservatives.

The question is why the hell can't conservative voters see what is going on? Fred doesn't seem to be getting any traction. 16% in South Carolina, with McLiberal getting 33%? WTF is going on in the conservative movement? I'm worried that by the time the MS primary rolls around in March, the most conservative Republican left to vote for will be that GFW Romney.

You're right about Huckabee - he'll get slaughtered in the general but a McCain/Hilary matchup is a win-win for our media!

I'm with Fred until Fred tells me he is out. If nothing else I hope he stays in long enough to make Huck crash and burn! If that happens, he might start getting some traction. It will be interesting to see what happens in states where only registered Republicans vote.

TFV - As if there is a difference between McCain and Hillary!?!

I remain convinced that had Fred jumped in when he should have, and while the whole Republican nation was chanting "Fred-Fred-Fred," it would have been impossible to bury him alive like this. Makes me sick.

I agree with what you are saying Rodger but probably for different reasons. Early on the kingmakers and pundits hitched their reputations on all these others and then had a vested interest in seeing Fred fail. If someone could start late (without them!) and succeed, there goes their relevance.

Its a shame that Fred had contractual obligations with NBC and ABC and was just too honorable to screw over his employers. I think that was bottom line reason he didn't get in earlier

Obviously our country must love these 2 year presidential campaigns since they seem to be rewarding those who jump through those hoops.

MCPO Airdale, the only difference I see is Iraq-- well and I haven't heard McCain cackle yet.

I wonder how many Mccain votes are from Democrats? Get him in the primary and vote for Hitlery or B. Hussain Obama in the election.
I agree with you Roger, they are buying Fred, cause they hate/fear him.

His biggest hurdle is Huckaboo, and who in hell saw that coming? When Pat Robertson ran in '88 the media, while still somewhat uncomfortable about attacking religion, skewered him.

This is the major leagues. Whatever he felt his contract obligations were, his dilly-dally hurt him badly, IMO. Unless I was the only person put to sleep by the whole thing?

Yeah - McCain had Navy wings 40+ years ago, but Hillary still ain't got past her broom yet.

Well, I donated $50 to Ferd after he placed 3rd in Iowa, and I haven't made a political donation since 2002. I thought he was going to start a roll. I figured the networks would have to give him some time after that. But I haven't heard diddley from his campaign since then, makes me wonder if he's just not aggressive enough for the job.

It ain't over yet...I still think Fred did the right thing by letting everyone else "wear out" the general populous and in the long run he'll still end up being a major player. And with the recent "tweak" of J.C. Watts as a running mate...sounds good to me. Just because the "Media" says so...don't make it so.

The wild card is still that little sawed off prick who's NYC mayor.

I was desperate for JC Watts to become a major force in Republican politics, and for awhile it looked like he was on the way. Finally though, I concluded after watching him appear on Sunday talk shows every single week, that once taken off the prepared topic he was unable to speak extemporaneously, with authority. This speculation then appears a politically expedient contrivance, and actually has a negative effect on me. I would however eagerly embrace a Fred Thompson/Ward Connerly ticket, and there would be no pandering to racial politics involved on my part. Prolly moot anyway since it looks like Fred is going to bail.

There's nobody else in the race who couldn't - hell, make that wouldn't have been a democrat just 30 years ago. I'm nuking everyone tonight. Sorry.
