Salvage This

Second Chance

Mother Superior and I both would rather spend a day in Home Depot and Borders Books than go to the opera.  For her 39th birthday she wanted to go to a salvage warehouse in Baltimore she'd heard about, called Second Chance Salvage. She was apprehensive about going there by herself, so I agreed -- it was way better than the alternative present she wanted ... me doing molding.

Second Chance is just a few blocks from the Ravens' stadium in the Inner Harbor, and a snap to find.  Located in 5 separate warehouses bunched close together, it is is huge.  According to the guy, it's the largest salvage outlet on the East coast.  I doubt there's a single furnishing, or building accoutrement you can name that you can't buy here.  If  this is your cup of tea, and you're near Baltimore, I highly recommend it.  If you're from out of town, there's a Holiday Inn  Express right there.

Click here for slides of some of the pictures I took.  I was hesitant about using the flash, so the focus is not always the best, but you'll get a good sense of things.  What did we buy?  Nothing.  There was a brand new Sub Zero 601R refrigerator for $1995, and A 601F freezer for $1495 that we'd have been sorely tempted to buy,  as a replacement for our 401 series that's about to crap out, but they were sold.

I liked the stuffed bear and the stuffed Algore.

In line with Tim's thinking, that bear would make a great butler's table. Just attach a serving tray on one of those paws! Great stuff, especially those fireplace mantels.

What a great birthday gift! How long did you stay there and did you feel like that was enough time to see it all or were you rushed? The pictures didn't make the place seem too crowded with either stuff ( so you couldn't see things) or people ( so you didn't have to shoot someone to get them out of the way).

I am sooo jealous! Lucky MS!

We were there about 3 hours, just to get an overview. In all that time the only people we saw were employees - not a single customer. They do not advertise, and have some tie-in with the city I think. When we go back it will be to get something, and will have measurements of everything. Like moldings... shoot, I can do an entire room for what one strip would cost me at Home Depot, and get solis walnut to boot.

I'll be moving out your way shortly, just so I can hang out there. Of course, I'll be needing to stay with you and MoSup for a couple months or a year, while I find a place of my own.

WOW! Turnstiles for every door of the house! And a lovely baby pram.

And who could pass up the picture of Cramer?

Lots of headstone material. You can make your own fake cemetery in the back yard. The neighbors may grumble but you could look at the neighbor....point to a stone...then back to the neighbor...let out a small cough.....PRESTO!!! No more whining neighbors!
