Not fit for human consumption. The Mrs bought some "chunk light" (it was on sale), son and I decided to make some Tuna sammies, opened the can took one whiff and headed straight for the trash. I think what is labeled "Solid" is the one and only tuna from yesteryear, then the tuna geniuses started packaging entrails as "light". It should be restricted for sale to prisons only.

I've noted the same as well. The stuff the cats eat has better consistency than "chunk light" although the brand the Boss buys is dyed dark red.
Reagan the Wonder Dog seemed to like it okay last night.
Bumble Bee is often sold for less than canned cat food. We buy it for our two cats. CotS white albacore does stink. I haven't eaten canned tuna in over a year now.
Sure Rodger, but dogs are into coprophagia (sp) too.
We take tuna seriously.
When I moved to this sleepy community 30 years ago, Bumble Bee--then owned by Castle & Cook--was the largest employer in the county. Had to be. Running three shifts and at least 30% of the workforce scheduled to work usually failed to show up for work. Astoria was a party town. Payday meant a three day drunk. Or, if you were wise enough to pace yourself, four days.
Bumble Bee was the number one brand for seafood in the world. What started as an association of local fish processors in 1899 is now owned by Connors Bros. Income Fund. (Full history here.)
The only vestige left of this once proud company is a museum operated by a local feller with more money than common sense. But a really nice guy. That's what we want from local fellers with more money than common sense.
Yes, you're lucky if you get a solid piece of meat in a "solid" can of tuna. You want cheap? Or you want quality?
For quality, try this. Please notice the prices. The market still works. You have to pay for what you want.
BTW-I never buy Bumble Bee brand anymore. Pretty sad, huh?
I used to live in SoCal @ 20 years ago and made the acquaintence of some "tuna brokers". If I recall correctly, they said that while we round eyes in the U.S.A. will only buy and eat "white" tuna (leaving the "red" tuna for our cats), in the Far East they will consume both the white and the red stuff without a problem.
I won't eat meat out of a can. I just won't do it.
Especially not with a couple of Costco's in town. You'd have to be insane to buy canned meat with their meat prices.
Funny thing is, they still sell both.
I loves me some fresh tuna - on a grill, in sushi, etc. That tuna is always dark red. How, or when, does tuna go from a beautiful merlot color to pale white when you open a can of the stuff?
You're better off not eating Albacore tuna. That's a top feeder and therefore you get more toxins from it (IT eats all the crap that eats the crap....).
Sondra,
If albacore is crap, what the hell is the cheaper stuff the stores sell? Albacore is supposed to be the BETTER choice!
SondraK raises her own tuna in the hot tub, and feeds her dogs range fed prime rib, but us ordinary people can't afford all that stuff. Besides, by this time my guts are tenderized with MSG, and preserved by 80 years of benzoate hydro-phizzos, so wtf do I care? I want cheap, tasty tuna like before. I said cheap.
Costco's own brand Kirkland is as good if not better than any tuna .
Don't buy that enviro-tard crap, Sondra.
Mercury is the tastiest of the transition metals. Insist on it.
I like tuna sammichs and am very careful with any tuna I open. But Sondra is correct Albacore is the best and specially for sammichs.
I think Her Perpetual Moistness actually advised against Albacore.
Throw out the fish...Eat the cat.
I have certainly noticed. The savings on a can of Bumblebee versus Starkist or Chicken of the Sea is not worth it.
Bumblebee is a can of shit, not tuna. By the time you finish squeezing out the excess water you're consistently left with a little smear of fibrous material in the bottom of the can that is maybe, *maybe* a "fish byproduct". But I refuse to call it tuna.
